So... I was cruzing down the road when out of nowhere the car started to puttz an shut off.... would not turn on for the life of me. My pops took it into his shop an said it's gotta be the ECM... I pulled it out of the car an I have it in my hands... does anyone no what the numbers I have to use to match up a new one with... there a bunch of numbers on this thing! Autozone wants 300.00 for a new one an said it has to be flashed... I dont want to buy the wrong one.

Umm why would it be the computer? Could be the Idle Control Valve. Could be MAF, could be worn out plugs and wires, could be bad wiring harness, could be.....................

A broken PCM fuse could cause that too. And it would give the false impression that the PCM is broken.

Could be about a thousand things that AREN'T $300 and ARE easier to replace correctly.

Bad fuel pump?
out of gas?
Coilpack?
Coilpack wiring?
bad alternator?
hell.. it could be a frickin' flat tire for all we know. The point is: you have no codes, no troubleshooting, and nowhere to go from here except guess.

I suggest you reinstall the PCM, and then have your codes read (either by your dad's shop or by a handheld OBD-II scanner.) Return here with the code NUMBERS (not the description you get from the guy who reads them..) Autozone will read for free, IF your car will get there, otherwise purchase a handheld scanner or have your dad's shop do it, etc.

Once we have codes, THEN we can narrow down the area of your problem.

P.S.

ECM = PCM = Computer

They are interchangeable in this circumstance
