well i was gonna post this in the for sale section, but it wont let me start a new thread so im putting it on here, im in need of a egr valve, wondering if anybody has one laying around that works, shoot me a price thanks

Rare for an EGR valve to go. More likely your EGR passages need cleaning, and if it's been going on long enough, you might need a DPFE sensor, I think.

To test the EGR, apply VAC to your EGR valve while the engine is running. If the engine starts to run rough, or stumbles, your valve is good. It should hold at that point without you having to re-establish more vacuum.

Did you have any codes? What were they?

well all i know is it says insuffecient flow when i hook the scanner up to it, so i just figured it was a new valve i needed
Wrong solution to diagnosis.

Try what TDF suggested and then post again. If you haven't deleted the codes, scan again and then post the exact code(s).

isn't insufficent flow normally pluged up passages behind the tb? also the would be a P401 ... do the egr test and clean the egr passages behind the tb and see what happens ... also get the exact codes if possible ...

also if the valve is bad your better off just getting a new one and not trying to find on in the classifieds since I doubt you would fine one ...

I sent a PM suggesting exactly that. Save money. If the code comes back, scan the exact code if possible - which will likely indicate need for the DPFE sensor.

i had the same problem, i ended up replacing every part ofthe egr system and it was only a vacuum line that had a small leak so check them first. theres a green one and red one i beleive behing hte egr valve and maybe one or 2 going to the sensor

Both times that has happened to me it was the DPFE that went bad. Checking that passages might not be bad idea also.

I needed the DPFE on my first contour. My Merc, I simply cleaned the EGR passages and all has been good ever since. If you let it go too long, or you get corrosion inside the DPFE (as in my case), you'll need to replace it.

I same to have isimular issues, but getting the 2 codes -

P0401 EGR Flow Insufficent
P0402 EGR Flow Excessive

Both errors have been cleared and come back.

I'm getting surging at slower speeds when driving.

So am I looking at trying to clean out lines or is it DPFE related ??

I assume you have a v6?

This is a rather old post but I'd bet its the DPFE sensor if you're getting both those codes. The DPFE sensor is what reports back how much flow you're getting through your EGR so if it says you have insufficient and excessive flow at the same time it's probably that sensor. I think you can get them from the dealership for around 50 bucks if you have a source like Bill Jenkins or Steve at Tousley. Otherwise $70 at fordpartsonline http://www.trademotion.com/partloca...5&make=10&model=Contour&year=2000&catalogid=1

Yes its a 6 cyl. The year is 1998,Mercury Mystique.

Thanks for the link ,I tried the search as 'EGR Valve ',so it didn't come up and the VB hear will not search a general 'EGR' as its only 3 characters.

thanks again for the input, much appreciated.
