Engine is bucking under full throttle

First of all I did search and found about 5 different "answers" but I still want to see what people think. If I baby the throttle and shift at like 2k the car is fine, but when I give the car full throttle, at about 3k the car bucks or stumbles and then jumps. When I let off it is fine. Suggestions

have you changed any of the plugs or wires or anything like that lately?? i had that issue to. At first i thought it was my fuel pump, and mostly it was but i also found that my the metal collar on my new plug wire that "snaps" on top of the plug didnt snap all the way on and worked its way up the boot and i had a real bad miss in the middle of my RPM range

I'll have to check my wire since I did just have them off a few weeks ago while doing an alternator swap. I dont know about CEL's because I took the light out a while ago. I will reinstall it and see what I get.

oh yeah and the rpm's drop when the bucking occurs...usually at WOT

You do not need to reinstall the bulb to get the CEL codes. Just make sure you have Fuse 11 (3 Amp) installed (not missing) at the Power Distribution Box next to the battery.

$100 it's wires. Almost every Duratec I know with rpm bucking above 2k is solved by wires.

Most probably IMRC failure. Is the Check Engine Light on? Get it read (free) at Advance or Autozone and post the exact code(s).

Sounds really close like my problem. If I go full throttle the car jerks and jumps but if I give it a little throttle a time it runs fine. I am almost certain it is my IMRC being that it is toast and no longer works. I had a CEL 1518 intake runners stuck open. Check to see if your IMRC still works...worth a shot. I'm in the process of ordering a transistor to fix my broken IMRC so we'll see if that is it.

I have bucking issues as well, but want to make sure y'all think wires is my problem as well. It starts at low 2k and doesn't stop until about 3500. Also, its light in all gears except 3rd, where it's so bad I generally skip 3rd all together.

Still think its wires in my case?

Wires, wires, wires. They are routine maintence. You won't be wasting your money if yours are old. Always try the cheap and easy fixes first, especially when they involve proper maintence!

46k miles? When do most people replace their wires?

I'm not saying I'm not going to try it, just that is it unusual to have this problem at 46k?

Age is also an issue in maintenance items. If you remove them often, or have recently disturbed them, then that can also cause issues. The wires are now 7 years old, change 'em & use the wires recommended on this site for best results.

What kind is recommended? I've done a search and most people mention the autolite or motocraft brand. Should I go to Ford to get them?

The original Motorcraft wires are excellent. Best thing on these cars, period.

Otherwise, a set of Autolite Professionals is a good option.

Then there's Todds suggestion of the $55 Autolite plug wires - Pro-fit I think they're called. The cheaper autolites may have been hit or miss, but mostly they seem to have been good. I got a set on my first Contour & they were fine. So far only about a half dozen people I can recall had trouble with them.

Magnacore wires had been highly recommended, but recently they've had problems so I can't recommend them.

Yes, I believe you are "supposed" to change your wires every 20,000 miles or something rediculous like that. Most of us use them till they are no good. With 46k, it is very possibly that they are bad. I bought "Ford Racing 9mm" wires and they crapped out on my at around 15,000 miles. If you can find Autolite wires at Autozone or the such, then go ahead with those (lifetime warrenty!). OEM Ford wires are never a bad choice, but the price is quite high. I went with Taylor Thundervolt 8.2 mm wires. I bought them for $55 shipped and they are quality wires! Many people have also had success with Magnecore 8mm wires, however they carry a heavy price tag also! I would personally recommend to stay away from Ford Racing Wires and Bosch wires for the v6 Contour/Mystique/Cougars. Many have had problems with them, however I am not saying that all Ford Racing Wires sets and Bosch wires are bad.

Good luck.
