And this is a good reason why people should be less stupid. Most problems in the world would be solved by proper application of common sense.

Damn that sucks...I agree with FIND though.

Anyways, I know in Michigan you can apply for a lost title and get one in the mail...I've done it before

Make certain that the paperwork is filed

Make certain that the paperwork is filed

Although no help to the guy with the svt, when ever you sell or buy a car, make certain YOURSELF that all of the paperwork is filed immediately.

If you sell a car go with the buyer to DMV and get it done right now. If the buyer doesn't file and has an accident, without paperwork YOU are liable.

If you buy a car, go with the seller to the DMV and get it done. That way and paperwork problems will happen before they dissappear.

You can't apply for a lost title if your name wasn't on the title to begin with.

In some states you can. You need to show that you have made reasonable attempts to contact the previous owner, and that you legally obtained the vehicle. A judge signs off on it and viola, you have a title. I have done that with several cars I pulled from salvage yards that I realized were rebuild-able even though the yard didn't have a title for them.

Yup, like I said, common sense. My first stop after signing a title or receiving a title is always the treasurers office to get the vehicle registered or to turn in the proof of sale.

All depends on the state. You don't need to go with. All you need to do in MN is either A) fill out a section of the title that you are selling and send that to the state. B) go online with the vin, title number etc and do a report of sale. That way you are not liable for anything that happens to the car after said date of sale.

Like FIND said, you can try going threw the courts and get a title in your name that way. But if you do, you need to also have the car bonded (in mn), in case the "original" owner says that it is still his car...and has the title to prove it. That way you aren't screwed out of the value of the vehicle. Only thing you are are out of is the cost of the bond.

if someone manages to get the vin from him we can check our lists, see if it has ever been in the registry.

Good idea. I e-mailed him and told him to join this site so we could help him more. CEG is where you go for parts and advice for fixing contours, so if he can get his title issues straightened out, this is where he wants to be.
