GM Radio in the CSVT?

Can this be done? I have a 1998 CSVT with the stock head unit. My brother just got a 2007 Chevy Silverado and upgraded his head unit. He gave me the old one to see if it will work in the CSVT. The model# 15940103. I was assuming as long as I can get the stock CSVT wiring harness and find a wiring harness for the GM radio and wire them together it would work. I dont care about XM, OnStar, Nav, Reverse Cam, just DVD, CD and radio (Not sure if this plays dvds). Any assistance would be great.

That's a drag. I seriously cant do some hard wiring and get it to work? I can work on how to mount it once I get the wiring worked out. Not possible?

Yeah, you can probably wire it easily with the aftermarket plug made for our cars, a GM OEM wiring harness, and a decent schematic. But where ya gonna put that big arsed radio?

What does it look like? I'll trade you my stock GP radio, even find you the wiring harness from the junkyard for it and pay for shipping both ways if you wanna switch.

It's the stok radio with red LEDs out of a 2006 Grand Prix

It makes logical sense that power is power and speakers are speakers. I think if I can get a snap on wire harness for the stock and a snap on wire harness for the radio and connect power, speakers I'm good. It just doesnt make sense that this wouldnt work. Is there something propriatery that GM has on their radios? Naw...

it will work perfectly fine. Just get a regular wiring harness for the contour and then a reverse harness for the gm....

BUT there may be a problem. Most of the new GM's need a special harness..the Scosche GM09B... this means that the harness is $120 bucks and I dont beleive they make a reverse harness for it.

The reason the new GM's need it is because they dont have an accessory wire... this integrates that.

Ask your bro if he had to pay a bunch for his wiring harness...if thats the case i think you're screwed...and besides where the heck would you mount the 1.5 din radio??

Actually alot of GM radios have antitheft. There is a code that needs to be entered when ever disonnected. Make sure your brother has that code if applicable.

It won't work.... the GM like 00+ all use a data bus turn on, instead of switched +12V. So like 2 or 3 volts on the GM radio turn it on.... When putting an after market radio in a newer GM you have to run a new wire for accessory unless you use the GM09 harness which is $120

Antitheft is easy to unlock if you know how to do it, and have the number to call to get the unlock code.. ;)

Damn dealer charged me $35 to get the number. Same dealer that sold me the truck. I was pissed.

Well..... install bays and dealerships would charge as well, (probably more at a dealership) probably would of been around them same price, like 30 mins of labor time, which is about 17.99 for every 15 min... figure how much time it takes to find the tech sheet on it, check the vehicle in and out, get the code, call the code in, get the code, put the code in, and that's assuming everything goes off without a hitch....

So yeah.... the stupid newer GM's can have a new radio put in without using the GM09 as long as they don't have RDS. If you don't use the GM09 though you lose door chime..... (since it's integrated with the radio) If the stock radio has RDS you HAVE to use the GM09, otherwise you can use the 70-2003 I think, Could be wrong with that part number, it's the GM like 2002 and up harness.... the accessory just has to be rewired for the after market radio to turn on.... Which is really not that hard to do, just fuse the proper accessory wire from the ignition and your good to go....

An like the other guy said earlier, the GM's have Double DIN or DIN an a half radios usually, Ford contours are just DIN, unless you have that guy who made the dash piece for has in dash DBL DIN radio, relocated his HVAC controls to the center console under the E-brake.... You could put an older GM radio in, but good luck putting a newer one in...

Well, it sounds like it would be too much work. This radio seemed to be a possible option, but with the wiring issues and the massive size of it being and issue I will just have to pass. Maybe he would be ok with me selling it. Then take the cash and buy a decent touch screen dvd/mp3/yada/yada.

Thanks for everyones help with this one.

How? What strings? Knowledge is what I am after. I wasnt looking to spend much cash to get this in. Please explain Steeda...

Please see attached for why this won't work.... Observe the Radio ignition row.... You get that to work and I'll S*** a brick..... Let alone if you do get it to work, you'll need that custom dash ;)

Custom dash hmm doesn't seem to hard
I know how its commanded on. Its not very complicated. Well maybe for a 12 volt installer with no other electronics background.

All you have to do is trick the radio to thinking its being commanded on Via the bus. Very easy my best buy installer friend.

Remember who I am...

Are you willing to make me a custom wiring harness? How much?

If you want the truth its probably not worth it cost wise. The bezel will cost you about 300 to build. And for the harness probably looking in the 100-150 dollar range.

If your looking for a cheap route, You should just buy some other radio and scrap that idea.

You've triggered my curiosity, how do you know the command sequence for the GM LAN? Do you have a service manual or something like that? Granted most of my electronics background is probably small compared to some I have worked with who have gone to college for electronics... I understand you'd have to trick the radio, but GM LAN sounds like a pretty big pain in the ass to try an trick a radio....

Its easy its just voltage sensing. You just have to drop from 12 volts to the voltage of the output of the Lan. Its not worth it but its def do able.

For the cost to put one in a contour you're better off just buyin a dif radio

See that's what I thought, since when you multimeter it you get like 2V or 3V, but I thought there was more like a sequence of on off input voltage to turn off and on...
