My AC is short cycling. I am not going to try to mess with the refrigerant, I understand it's a complex system and I don't have the tools, nor do I want to buy them.

I understand that short cycling could be low pressure, high pressure, or a bad high pressure switch. Since I haven't added any refrigerant, I think it will turn out to be low pressure or the switch.

I was wondering how cheap, and how easy, it is to replace the switch??

Just in case that's the problem, I could possibly save an evac/recharge cost that isn't necessary. If it's like $30 and 15 minutes might be worth the gamble before I take it in.

if the system is short cycling then the pressure switches are working correctly .... whats happening is the compresser pumps the system down and since you are most likely low on refridgerant the compressor gets the system down to the low presusre cut out activated by the low pressure switch. then turns the compressor off and the pressure will rise and then the compressor will kick in again.

don't waste time randomly changing parts. take it to a shop and get it checked out or buy the tools. guage set is about $60 at autozone for the cheap ones and a venturi style vacuum pump is only about $70 from the eastwood company ...

most likely the system is short cycling because there is a leak in the system and the refridgerant is low ...

If you are doing it for a living I agree but for the occassional use they're fine.

No, they truly are crap quality. The gauge set is cheap junk, the vaccum pump requires an air compressor that costs more than taking the car to a shop and still can't pull a decent vacuum.

Trust me, I learned this particular lesson the hard way.

They're crap.
