Hello, I drive (try to drive) a 2000 SVT. It currently has 69k and has had lots of work! The newest issue is that the engine hesitates (coughs, and ocassionally backfires) upon hard acceleration. If I shift too soon or try to hot rod the car is when this is sure to happen. The car is in the shop but without a check engine light on, they cannot diagnose FOR SURE. The tech wants first to try new plugs and wires, but was told it would come to about $500. I don't do any of my own work, no tools or knowledge for this. I sure love my car but don't want to drop the money if this isn't the problem.

Any suggestions or other relative information?

Thanks all!

thing is, we can provide u with info that u could use. unfortunately. without tools they're basically useless unless u know someone that could do them 4 ya. this happened to me too b4. i never did isolate the problem tho as it went away. i know 4 sure it wasnt the spark plugs nor wires. the only thing i changed was the battery.

$500 for plugs and Wires Installed? WTH?

Your over paying around $300+

Plugs are $3-$4 a piece, Wires are $40-$60 <--- thats under $100 for parts

$400+ for one hour of labor is highway robbery.

Find a new mechanic, Quickly...

But they are correct for changing the plugs and wires as a starting point to your problems.

They probably have a couple of hours into the diagnosis so you need to see how much of the 500 is already "gone". Hard to believe wires and plugs can go that bad without setting a misfire code. Could also be fuel related but that should also set a code. Does the shop have proper equipment or it a backyard or mom and pop garage (even they should have a capable scanner).

I'd try a different shop.

I purchased my CSVT and had similar symptoms. After banging out the front plugs(all properly gapped, normal wear) I was flabbergasted to find 3 different plugs(Bosh,Motorcraft&Autolite) in Horrible shape, gapped at .60+ on the back row :nonono::nonono::nonono: And Believe it or not no CEL

After new plugs and wires problem solved.

Screw the dignosis! Ask questions here on CEG! Everytime I have a Contour misfire new wires always fixes it. $55 for Autolite wires. I do plugs while I'm in there. The Duratec loves to eat plug wires due to it's odd firing. Go to the region your from and ask for help. If you're in Pheonix there has to be someone there to help.

quoted for the truth. most miss fire problems are the plugs and wires. always best to replace both as the plugs/wires can often carbon track, happend to my car and my fathers car. $500 is way to much, find another mechanic or a local CEGer that is willing to help out.

where are you located? Maybe someone near you could come over and help you with this problem. That way you can save your arm and a leg from the dealership.
