How many miles on your tour? when were your problems?

1999 Mercury Mystique LS 2.5L w/MTX
200,000 mile as of this week!

I'm the original owner. I couldn't afford the SVT back in '98 and they weren't dealing on them either. I picked up my Mercury for about $5k less than the SVT. The only reason I got the Merc. was that my friend worked at the Mercury dealer and gave me the best deal I could find.

I ordered it February '99 and picked it up on April 15, 1999. The LS had everything and I ordered it with the V6 and 5-speed. The only additional options I chose were the engine block heater (I think it was $25), premium sound with in dash CD and traction control.

Now it has a bunch of SVT stuff on it sourced through the boards and on ebay.
It has been an excellent trouble free car for 200,000 miles.

On my '98 SE, 2.5, MTX -
  • Current mileage: 61,000
  • Original owner
  • Not a single thing has gone wrong that wasn't warranty related other than normal wear items; i.e. one battery and a set of tires.
  • Still on the original brakes and water pump
'96 Sport, 2.0, ATX -
  • Current mileage: 139,450
  • Second owner (bought it Saturday)
  • Nothing has yet gone wrong for me, but issues the original owner fixed were:
    • Transmission repair
    • A/C leak repaired
    • Brake job on rear drums
    • New wiring harness
  • Still needing to be repaired:
    • Intermittent short in the cooling fan
    • Needs new head gasket
    • Driver's window has some grit or something in the motor that is making it grind
    • Loud clunking noises from the trunk

lumbar support stopped working around year 2

half-shaft and diff replaced because popping clutch at 5k-rpm on a drag-strip is a stupid thing to do

new battery

something that controls airbag broke in steering column - $200

80kish - bolts holding shifter/bracket loosened up and I *nearly* spent $1,500 having the tranny torn down b4 i found the loose bolts

96k - 2/28/07- bank one cat. converter went south ($950 yikes!)

Everthing still works (except lumbar adj.) Mobil 1 all it's life, still pulls like a freight train!

Still needing to be repaired: Loud clunking noises from the trunk
I have the same thing. I hear it over the right wheel well when I hit deep potholes or come off of speedbumps. It gets worse when the car is weighed down by a lot of passengers. I think it's the strut mount.

2nd Owner 99 SVT with 84,000 miles on it. It had a new fuel pump/sending unit installed at 56,000 miles and had the rear exhaust manifold/pre-cat replaced under warranty at 70,000 miles. Luckily, no real problems as of yet.

110,000 Miles. Springs (rear) Replaced, Once (Twice?) Catalytic Converter (Back one) Sore Subject. Could have bought a Brand New Y-Pipe Cat and dual for SVt for what we paid to get fixed. (Don't tell my wife). And as FYI, both my sway bar mounts had to be WELDED back on. I live in Wisconsin (LOts of salt). Guys at Dealer said it could possible cost a fortune to fix since everything is so rusted. He welded it and so far it works fine. What I am concerned with now is that when i go through a car wash, my Traction Control and ABS Light comes on. VERY Worried about that.

Suggestions?

Just hit 30K on my '98. Sounds and feels like I need new rotors already.

By the time I hit 118K on my old '96, it was about shot. AC Compressor gave out. Rotors needed replacing for the third time. Tie rods shot. etc. etc.

Engine, transmission and clutch were still like new though.

My 98 SE 2.0L has 105,235 miles on it, and I've replaced the timing belt twice, water pump once, and odds & ends. It runs gr8, and I will keep it even after I buy my next vehicle. Oh! I replaced the Transmission Range Sensor recently, and that was after I got the usual quotes of $500-$1500 to repair the transmission.

It started to idling funny, and shakes crazy on speed over 100 km/h. I have no clue of the problem:shrug: .

I get that in my Escort, I think it's the same problem, or the strut itself going out. Not to mention its also spongy when going over bumps in the back.

Just had this starting to happen on mine as well. Not too pleased as I just got the timing belt fixed and I just developed a rather noisy exhaust leak from my flexpipe.
The noise is very similar to what happened to the Taurus a couple months back. Had a rear stabilizer arm come loose and it made about the same clunking noise Lou3 describes. I am hoping it is something like that as I just had the rear struts done not too long ago.

my tour' is 8 years old, and has 157K on it.

New timing belt at 155K, needs another one due to a defective tensioner

broken rear spring, new suspension coming soon ;)

A/C recharged

I have driven it... almost 3k miles?
