I know most of you probably think that roof racks dont belong on our CSVT's. I however think they look pretty legit, not only that but I desperately need one. I commute to class probably 10miles one way and I have class all over campus, so I transport my bike in the back seat. I really dont like packing my bike in my car, especially when my interior is so clean. So I wouldn't be doing this for looks (I hate when people do that), I have a legitimate need to transport my bike as well as my snowboard. So my question is, are there any systems from other cars that are compatible, or am I stuck spending close to $300 on a yakima setup. Im going to swing by a salvage yard today, see if I cant get lucky.

As far as I have found, Yakima only. Thule definitely not, Yakima can be used from many different models of cars though as long as they are (IIRC) 48" cross bar models so there's a lot of used options for Yakima racks. Personally, I picked one up off my assistant manager for $50 with wind deflector, it was on his '97 Legacy. Only thing I need to get are new Q clips which are roughly $40/pair.

You meeeaaaannnnnn, like this?! :3 lol I just wanted to whore the car out hahahahahahaahahahaha

I use mine when I go trailing because sometimes the trails I hit are just too far to just simply ride out. Other times, I have a meeting point with others in the middle of town and bring the bike there and ride with some people that way I'm not tired when I meet up with them.

I don't think you'll find a single roof rack that's compatible with your car other than the Yakima rack with Q40 clips. You can piece together a used rack for around $250. A new rack is well over $300 so I'm not sure if you were talking about new or used price.

Here's mine on one of my SVTs.

•••• those cars are sexy....thats kind of what I was getting at. Use any crossbars around 48", just need contour specific mounting brackets (Q40)?

Q40s are the only clips that work on our cars.

What does that have to do with a bike or snowboard rack on one? Just sincerely curious...

I guess people feel that performance and roof rack don't go together.

No, Q40 clips are the lower parts that hold onto the door frame, what you need are 2 48" round bars, 4 "Q" tower (these hold the bars and house the cam lock to lock down the clips), and then 2 sets of Q40 clips. That's a complete setup, check e-bay looked like there were quite a few for pretty cheap on there. You can get all those parts separately on Amazon brand new, but they will run around $300.

Oh and BTW, I've heard the wind deflector is a must, does not come with base rack, people report very loud wind noise around 30-40mph without them.

Yes, you absolutely want the fairing. It's loud enough as it is with the fairing, I can't imagine what it sounds like without.

I like the look of the CSVT with the Yakima rack and the fairing. Who said it doesn't belong on these cars? I mean, they put these things on all VW cars performance or not...are they someone more special than our cars?

Please.

my two 2 cents.

Do most of the VW guys actually use them or is it just for the look? I say if its actually going to be used, go for it. Doing it for a look, forget it.

I got mine so I could finally get a kayak and go with my friend, and at $50 for everything, it was a perfect deal.

The look is just a bonus.

Well I'll tell you what, I got it off my assistant manager, it had come on his car when he bought it and he didn't need it, he listed it on craigslist for $75 (the cost of the wind deflector brand new) and sold it to me for $50 because he was tired of getting low ball offers. So I'm sure you could pick one up for cheap on craigslist. This one has a broken cam bolt cover, it does not affect the mounting and a used cover can be had on ebay for $25.

EDIT: Would need a wind deflector, but even has the locks for ~$130, just one I found in 2 seconds, there are plenty more. http://www.ebay.com/itm/YAKIMA-RACK...971&pid=100010&prg=1090&rk=1&sd=300802332734&

Yeah Im hoping someone I know has one that they arent using so I can get it for cheap. If I had the money I would pick one up off ebay, or even better if thule made mounting hardware I would probably already have one.
