Knocking sound coming from the head/valvetrain

mine makes a very similat noise, loud ass knock but no codes or performance loss due to it, it is loud enough that my wife was able to hear it by running next to me on the highway with the windows up,, and with them down she said is was really loud,, best way i can describe it is 2 hammers hitting each other. i run it up to 6700 all the time i am actually hoping to break whaterver it is. I have had that damned motor apart several times now,, pulled and checked every rocker and lifter, and even replaced timing chains gears ect. so i give up if i don't blow it up before spring it is getting a new motor.

If there's no metal in the oil I'd look to external parts like in the timing or accessories. do you have a plastic or metal impeller on your water pump, the plastic one mine had made a similar noise until I replaced it, I replaced it with a metal one. I don't know how well the stethoscope idea would work in that area but I'd look in that area just to be safe.
 
Well motor's dead, I think it's a spun rod bearing... Won't turn over. It was REALLY loud the night before it died, and just didn't start the next morning, so I think the bearing spun and froze.
