Losing power in puddles

Ok this has happened to me a few times when it raining out. When i go through a big puddle I lose power steering and my belts start to squeal. Now i've searched the old and new forums for some help on this topic and i came across some mention of a "splash guard"

I can't seem to find one for the V6 engine anymore. Does anyone know where i can get these from? Any help would be appreciated.

this is a very dangerous situatuin!

there are some scientific reasons for loosing power and steering:
when you drive through a poddle "rolling resistance " infront of the tire increases actually if you drive faster there is more rolling resistance force.,also there are adheasion force between tire and water, all these forces consume some engine power. you can imagine there is allways a wall of water infront of the tire, this water should escape through the tire threads to the sides or back of the tire, or trie go over it! (no other way)and the rate of escape of water through the threads is directly related to the depth and width and form of the tire threads and car speed, simply if water does not have time to go through the threads car actually floats on the water and you loose steering!!
they say tires with V shape or paralel threads provide better steering in puddles,
so tires should have enough threads,
all tires pressure should be set.

overcome with this water wall in front of tire consumes some engine power, if you drive with a constant speed from a dry road directly through a poddle you see speadometer obviosly drops some Km/hour.

another thing is that if your car has loose bushings, tierods, balljints,... in this situation highly contribute to loosing steering,
so I think first check the tires, then check the suspension for loose bushings,...
putting this aside there is another probability that: water penetrates wiring and engine components which causes engine does not work properly and loose power,...

i always thought it was the alternator getting wet, i drove through a deep puddle by accident and my battery light went on and i heard a belt squealing like a pig, car surged for a few seconds and then all was well. after that i avoided rainy days i just said to myself my car hates rain

yeah ,water splash and penetrates alternator,..

Yeah, bobdorit was describing aquaplaning which is a totally different situation.

Yep this is the same thing thats happening to me. So does anyone have a part number, or actual name of part, or picture of the part so i can see if i'm missing it and locate it. I went to the dealer and they looked at me like I had 12 heads when I asked about a splash guard:shrug:

I think what you need is called "inner fender spash guard" it is black polypropylene, or polyethylene! part that is located inside the fender.
I just search through internet... lots of pictures on ebay site.. I do not know how to upload picture.... but if you search the word in google and follow it you can find lots of pictures

I do not work Ebay too.....

just wanted to show what does it look like

Bobdorit - those pieces are the large outer fender splash guards. I think the smaller pieces closer to the belt are what everyone's looking for.

You know... it could just be that the serpentine belt needs replaced. Belt gets wet - belt slips - PS, alternator, and AC lose all power.

I switched up to a Gatorback serpentine belt. That's the ticket.

So how long has it been since you replaced the belt? That splash guard's not going to keep ALL the water out, no matter how good it is.

how about you pull the front passanger wheel of your car and take a picture and post it and we will be able to tell you if you have the splash shield in place.

but like I said it covers teh crank and the alternator, so if you can see those you don't have the splash shield. it hangs from the metal at the inside of the wheel well and hangs down to about the subframe ....

yeah thats what i figured.

i looked and saw someone had installed the splash shield on my '95 V6 Mystique! Thank you for the ID info!!

since it was my mother's car since new i am hoping the original dealer did it in fairfax va and followed the splash shield stuff i saw referenced here. new belt, crank damper, etc.

it is running well now with new ngk iridium plugs, 25+ mpg assorted driving, no vibration
