Mercury Cougar concept

Not that terrible, but I feel so bad for the "Cougar" nameplate.
First it was a T-Bird... Then it was a 2-door hatchback Contour, now it will be a Mustang if this happens.
Talking about not having a real identity.

1st it came from the mustang platform and that was where it started, if they where to bring it back it needs to go back from which it came. Ford bastered it from then on IMO.

They have a history of doing that. I'd love to see another pony car choice out there now that we know the new Mustang is gonna be a class killer. It's not like they can say they'll steal sales from each other since GM ran the Camaro and Firebird together and people usually preferred one over the other.

If it's going to be based on the 'Stang, then it should be a Capri. Give it flared fenders like the fox-body, and a hatch, and you'd have my interest. I always thought the Capri was the better looking of the two back in the day. Love the ass end of that concept though. The front, not so much.

I think if they're gonna use the Capri name they should bring over an import like the original since the Cougar can be the brands retro pony car.

The Capri in name got hacked twice from it's original form. I agree during it's short stint on the fox mustang platform it was good looking but it wasn't orginal like how the cougar started on the stang plat. + the Capri was a Ford in the beginning not a Mercury.

1st Capri '61- '64

I think I would be really dissapointed if Ford reskinned the Mustang and sold it as a Cougar. I kinda liked the last generation sharing a platform and drivetrain with the Contour but competing in a different segment. 2-door Fusion, anyone?

Meh I think Mercury should be able to make a Cougar, but the photos need a little more work. The nose needs that upward/outward ridge for sure. The lower bumper needs to be different as well. There should be no blinkers on the corners. They should be hidden away behind the grill. Fogs need chrome ring as it sets well with chrome ring on the grill, just like the original...

You're one of the few then. :) A two door Fusion isn't a bad idea although the Mustang idea makes sense because it started out as one.

I mostly liked it because it was one of the few departures from the rampant badge engineering that was going on at the Big Three back in the 80's and 90's. If Mercury's going to survive, they need to sell cars that people can only get at a Mercury dealership.

Gotta disagree there. Mercury has survived by selling slightly modified versions of regular Ford vehicles just like Lincoln. Mercury has always been a rebadge brand and Ford would kill them off before they let them move away from that.

+1

Ford Mercury Lincoln.

It has been this way for years. Each "brand" is just a slightly more "upscale" version of the prior.

Same approach GM is trying with chevy buick cadillac.

I dont care for the concept that much. As others have been quick to point out, looks too much like the Mustang. I understand the Cougar is a cousin to the Mustang, but this concept needs to distance itself a bit further from it IMO. The classic Cougar and certainly the new edge one accomplish this.

If they do make a new Cougar into production. Please give it Ecoboost and a MTX option!

Not holding my breathe though, Ford is not likely to make a class competing car to rival the Mustang.

I think this is pretty far from the Mustang look already. You get the aggressive and retro front/rear and the body screams Challenger more than it does Mustang (to me at least) and I like the muscle car styling without having to actually own a muscle car.
