Well my check engine light was on for the last couple days, so I finally ran an OBD II scan and it came back with these:

P0153Upstream Heated Oxygen Sensor circuit Slow Response - Bank No. 2.
P0420Catalyst System Efficiency below Limit - Bank No 1.
P1150Lack of Upstream Heated Oxygen Sensor Switch - Adaptive Fuel Limit - Bank No. 2.
P1151Lack of Upstream Heated Oxygen Sensor Switch - Sensor Indicates Lean - Bank No. 2.

I checked these in the FAQ, but I am no mechanic, so I really don't know what they mean.

Basically my interpretation is that my cat is on the way out and it is causing the sensor(O2?)to read wrong on the other ones.

Correct?

Any help would greatly be appreciated, and sorry if this question has been asked a bunch of times already, I am a noobie and I have to leave for work soon, so I had no time to search the forums.

the O2 sensor on bank two is bad and needs to be replaced ...

pre-cat on bank one is going bad ...

Is it safe to drive the car like this for a few days before I repair it, or can it cause further damage?

Thanks.
It will be fine for a few days. The Upstream Bank 2 is the one next to the radiator, closest to the oil filter. Remove the oil filter for more room and easier removal. Need a 7/8 inch open wrench, or 22 mm or O2 sensor removal tool ($12).

As for the P0420, what year and how many miles? Federal Cat Warranty is 8 years/80K miles. If above that, I would suggest trying the cheap and easy things first.

The P0420 could be many things. Maybe it is inefficient precats (and time for mileliminators.)

From TSB,

CATALYST EFFICIENCY MONITOR

P0420 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)Indicates Bank 1 catalyst system efficiency is below the acceptable threshold.

· Malfunctioning ECT/CHT
· High fuel pressure
· Damaged exhaust manifold
· Cylinder misfiring
· HO2S wiring concerns (shorted or chafed, bent pins, etc.)
· Damaged exhaust system pipe
· Damaged muffler/tailpipe assembly
· Retarded spark timing

Damaged Catalytic Converter:
· Use of leaded fuel
· Oil contamination/consumption
· Silicone contamination (sealants/cleaners)

Did you have work done recently on the car? It looks like your bank 2 upper O2 isn't even hooked up.

hit up up down down left right left right on the radio controls and then gas and brake for the A, B buttons...should be ready to rock then.

I just bought the car about 2 weeks ago.

I had a local mechanic look at it.

Said it was perfect except it needed a coolant flush.

Do you think it would be possible that he purposely unhooked the O2, thinking I would come back to him for repair?

If I had to make a guess, he accidentally knocked it and it came out. Or maybe it is time for a new sensor.

Check the connector first. It is up in the front passenger side by the radiator. You can follow the wire from the O2 from above. There is no way you can knock that connector out, it would have to be taken apart. I would ignore the cat code till you figure out that O2 problem. If you do need to replace it, I would replace both the upper front and rear if needed. I just did this and it appears this got rid of my cat codes on two cars so far we will see how long it lasts. www.sparkplugs.com has good prices on O2s.

Thanks for the help, but I can't find any O2's on Sparkplugs.com, just spark plugs.

After you pick your car you go to the product drop menu and pick O2s and denso.

Alright, I found it.

Thanks for the help.

Man, I gotta tell you, I have never done anything myself on a car beyond an oil change or replacing rotors and pads, and from the pictures in the FAQ this looks like an extremely frustrating job for an ametuer.

If I go to my mechanic to have this done, should I suggest to him to look at the FAQ to help him with the install, or are all O2 replacements basically the same on all cars, and therefore he would take this as an insult?

I drove with almost the same codes for about a year. I didnt really notice much in the way of other problems other than having the CEL light constantly on . I finally replaced the 02 sensor and the lights still persisted. When doing a UIM cleaning (the vacuum hole method) I noticed the slot below the throttle bore on the UIM was almost completely plugged in places. After cleaning and about a month of using fuel injector cleaner every gasup the CEL went away. I just did the full UIM/LIM clean and my cel hasnt returned in about 3 weeks.

My suggestion is to fix the O2 and do a UIM/Lim first. If You're lucky that might get rid of the CEL .
