New project Underway

Well a little update we just received the T5 boy is that thing light too makes our mtx57 feel like bricks. We detoured a little from the original motors I sent back the LS motor it was useless for the swap beside the fact I go to get pics and ideas from it. I ordered a 1999 taurus split port motor because it has all the accessories in the front of the motor plus the valve cover is slimmer giving me more room for the turbo kit and fans. I don't recall anyone ever dynoing a split port 3 liter motor with SVT cams yet so we will see if the motor does comparable to the 04's if so we have a perfect swap to do it with. We have a low 04 mileage motor if the bottom end of the 1999 3 liter is to weak for boost. I will post pics today soon Joey

Well it has been a long day running back in forth from the junkyard matching up parts. I had to ditch the Lincoln LS starter had totally different teeth spacing. I found out the the 350 chevy motor in the manual trucks have the same pitch in the flywheel and spacing and has the much larger 14" flywheel versus the 11" stock duratec. The flywheel is massive and tomorrow I will go have the a machinist cut me a spacer 1/2" with the duratec holes lined up along with a face plate to sandwich the flywheel 1/4" thick. I will weld the back spacer to the flywheel then go get it balanced by the other motor machinist. I will order a chevy stage 2 or 3 clutch one I find out about the spline on the ford versus chevy I may have to mix match disc. The 1999 Duratec motor will be an excellent motor I am just waiting on the PS and Alternator to get here tomorrow. We will pull the motor down change the bearings and look at the other parts for any wear. Then we will put in the SVT cams and have the motor painted to look fresh.

I am going pick up some alimunum tomorrow for the adapter plate it will end up being two plate where one bolts to the other. I may have to trim the bell housing to fit the starter better but not too much. I will have to make a 2" spacer for the LIM to allow the UIM to clear the front timing cover since we turned the intake for RWD application. I have 2" shorter distance from the original shifter to the T5 so I will have to get the engine very close to the firewall for this to work. The stock manifolds on the 1999 are perfect for our first base test. Here are a few pics of some very rough starts on the process.

what is the reason for the larger flywheel?

In order to mount the starter next to the block you have to space it out away from the block to get clearance. I will be sending it to a machine shop to take off the extra weight of the metal because that will hurt the performance some. Joey

When you said LS motor I thought you meant LSx SBC for a minute
If I were you I'd go with a V8 for this (either al. LSx Chevy or 302 SBF)-- more power, reliability and not a real wt. difference.

I did not realize the Contour flywheel was too small to fit a starter against the block, I need to take note of that. Any reason for going to a chevy flywheel instead of something like a Mustang flywheel (and starter if gear pitch is different)?

Ford uses a 10 spline input shaft, Chevy uses a 26 spline.

What are your plans for an oil pan and pick up tube? LS oil pan and pickup tube, custom made parts, etc...

Also, I see you are planning on using a T5; has there been any thoughts given toward plans to use an Astro A-5 or G-Force Gear set or keeping it under 250-300 ft-lbs and 300-350HP?

Additionally, does it work out that the input shaft of the T5 fits the pilot bearing of a Taurus motor or does the proper pilot bearing fit the crank? And will the input shaft of the T5 prove long enough to seat properly in a pilot bearing with the bell-housing spaced further from the block? (unlike the MTX75 the T5 will require the pilot bearing).

Finally, I have yet to see an LS engine in person, so I was wondering if there are any major differences between the LS block and the standard 3L block?

Ive done a split port swap with SVT casm before. I have some pics of it on my other computer if you want them. I used the 99 3L heads which I still have that have mild port work. I have since sold the cams. I cut off the waterpump driven cam and leveled it insuring clearance and balancing just inside the head. Let me know if you want the pics.

DId you dyno the car>?

Joey I did but I only got like 180fwhp i believe. I have to look up the dyno sheet if I still have it.

Yes, Jim's car was also a split port but it did not use the SVT cams.

not really it was a baseline...

I need to Pm you about to see what that guy wants to do with the headers he has on his 240.

so you are saying you were running stock tune because if so this explains why you didn't do but 180whp but was it with the 3.o UIM split port too becuase I know the UIM on the taurua is bigger?

Any Thoughts?

I only ask because these are the main hang-up points that I have come up with over the past year while thinking about what it would take to put a Duratec into my Mustang, but I do not have a block at my disposal, so my work has all been hypothetical and based on memory.

I'm not sure I even know what to say.
