I need a NJ inspection but currently running no res. or muff just straight pre cats and my main cat. Would i pass if i just put a borla muff where the res used to be? And if My rear strut is going bad, would that also be an issue?

as long as you have all the emissions stuff...the cat, etc. then the inspection station shouldn't care.

I wouldn't be so sure about that . I'd ask around at a couple local inspection stations , just to double-check . Also , fix that bad strut , because a bad strut can be unsafe - and they will probably nail ya for that if it's bad .

Fix the strut.
Understanding inspections and the emissions test
What is the purpose of the emissions test?
Despite a variety of efforts to improve the quality of our air, New Jersey has yet to reach the level of air quality required by the National Clean Air Act standards that were set in 1990.

To help alleviate this problem, we need to repair the vehicles that exceed national health standards by routinely inspecting them at an inspection facility. You can find your vehicle's due date on the sticker on your windshield. Remember, you won't be reminded by MVC, it is your responsibility to schedule the inspection.

Note: BMW Series 7 owners must provide accessibility to the vehicle’s On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) computer by removing the cover plate prior to inspection. BMW dealers can complete this task. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

The NJ inspection process
Make sure you have all necessary documentation (driver license, registration, proof of insurance) with you – you won't pass the inspection without them.

* The inspector will determine your car's engine type and prep it for testing
* Your brakes' suspension, steering, wheel alignment and safety features (headlights, taillights, tires, horn, windshield wipers and turn signals) will be checked
* The inspector will perform the appropriate emissions test based on the year, make and model of the vehicle
* The final stage of the test will assure that your gas cap is stable and limits the escape of fumes into the environment
* Upon completion, the inspector will place a new two-year sticker in your windshield

If you dont have all your information with you they wont even waste their time on testing you!

With Luca on everything! BUT you will probably get away with the bad strut! Do the repairs cause something small will mess up your bushings alignment and then ur looking at a crapload of money to repair! Take it as it hits(Im such a Hypocrit)!

Your exhaust will not pass! Get a stock SVT Exhaust and you should be set! I have one if you need one PM me if ur interested!

I took that info right from the MVC's website.

I still would fix the strut. I've known people that have failed the inspection because of bad strut/shocks.

I would fail them too.
I omitted the NJ in my above statment. It should have read: I've known NJ people that have failed the inspection because of bad strut/shock.

Better to fix it now and not have to go back.

but in the real world - READ: NY - they don't bother with the safety stuff. as long as your brakes aren't noticeably ruined, all your lights work, etc. they're not gonna put the car on a lift and take the wheels off and go through everything.

all depends on the mechanic is what i'm getting at i guess.

literally, here...they just plug into your obd2 port and see if there are any CEL's. If not, you pass. Oh and they might check your lights. Perhaps a quick check of the brakes with the wheels on the car and a flash light.

You will pass the inspection with a leaky/blown strut. I did with with my old 93 Subaru, all 4 struts blown/leaking.

As for the exhaust, you will pass, they don't have noise meters to measure. I have headers/custom Y pipe/OE CAT/Borla catback and I pass without any issues.

Bring it to the station in Rahway (136 GSP). Hardly any lines and friendly operators. Passed me with both cars and we chatted a bit about the SVT. :)

It really depends how lenient the guy doing the inspection is! Ive seen ppl fail for wipers! and Ive seen ppl with broke ass cars get by at the same time!

Make sure all your lights/wipers work.

Str8 pipes will probably not fly! and your good dont worry about it so much!
Althought Shaggy passed with that setup it seems he still had Hi-Flow mufflers and such to regulate a bit!
