it all started when i got on the interstate and couldn't go over 3500rpm. pulled over to check oil and oil pressure light came on. checked my oil and it was about 1 quart low. put oil in and light went out. i then got back onto the interstate. drove about 2 miles and the engine went to clattering but not loud. i let off of the gas. the noise stopped. so i gave it a little gass and tried to make it to the next exit and the car shut down soon after. still have lights and it still turns over. but won't start. could it be timing or oil pump?

the engine probsbly blew and lost compression. it might be the timing chain.

Welcome :) . Unfortunately, you "toasted" the bearings for the engine. It is not the timing chain and it is not the oil pump. At this point, you need a rebuild or 3L. You may be able to get it started eventually but the loud clattering will be there until it eventually locks up.

Edit. Should you get it started again, this thread has some sounds to listen for, for confirmation.

replace bearings?

replace bearings?

cant you just replace the bearings? i mean the motor isn't "TOASTED" if the block isn't cracked right? can be rebuilt. i've read in other posts that a common problem is the oil pumps and the timing seal. i'm leaking oil out of the seal and i did lose oil pressure while turning. also read that oil pick-up tube could have caused the problem. and you are talking about the crank bearings right?

also when i turn the car over the TAPPING is not heard. don't they havew a oil pressure switch on this thing too. i'm just trying to learn this CSVT ordeal. i also have a 98' csvt.

You didn't put a hole in the block, you could rebuild. Might have to do some machine work on the crank to fit new bearings. Someone else here did put a hole in the block, that's truly toast, some parts could be reused though.

2.5 to 3.0 swap

2.5 to 3.0 swap

ok i've igured out that i dont want to rebuild the 2.5L in my contour svt, can it be converted over to a 3.0 out ov a taurus with a tranny and engine swap? the rebuild cost for the 2.5 will run me more that the 3.0 w/ tranny. just trying to get any input on the matter. i have been told it can be done but i want to see if anyone has had it done and if it works and the problems involved.
