I've reset this code twice, and it keeps coming back. Aside from the CEL, I'm also getting poor fuel mileage (3-4 MPG drop), occasional smell of gas after startup, and fluctuating idling.

What to do?

First thing to check is the gas cap. Is it clean? How is the condition of the seal? Try coating with some petroleum jelly.

Some reason for that code are:
1) Bad gas cap
2) Canister valve issue
3) Loose fuel vapor hose/tube connections
4) Holes or cuts in 3).

Are you talking about seals on the part that unscrews? Or do I have to take something apart to get to the seals?

Also, where is the charcoal canister?

The vapor canister and all hoses connected to it were free of holes or cracks. I lubed the gas cap gasket with marine grease, despite it appearing to be in pristine condition.

I reset the CEL, so now back to the waiting game; however, I am still getting a strong gas smell near the rear of the car after startup. That can't be good...

Is there anything else I can check at home, or do I need to begin looking for a mechanic to do further testing?

HX1 DTC P0442: VISUAL INSPECTION FOR SMALL EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM LEAKS

Continuous Memory Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0442 indicates that a fuel vapor leak has been detected [as small as 0.10 cm (0.04 inch)] in the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) system. Possible causes:

-- After market parts and accessories nonconforming to the EVAP system specifications.

-- Damaged, cross threaded or loosely installed fuel filler cap.

-- Small holes or cuts in fuel vapor hoses/tubes (EVAP canister tube, EVAP canister outlet tube or EVAP return tube) in the EVAP system.

-- Loose fuel vapor hose/tube connections to EVAP system components.

-- EVAP system component [EVAP canister purge valve, fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor, canister vent (CV) solenoid, fuel vapor control valve tube assembly or fuel vapor vent valve assembly] seals leaking.

-- CV solenoid partially open when commanded closed.

-- EVAP canister leaking.

l Check for presence of fuel filler cap. (Perform Pinpoint Test Step «HX2» before tightening a loose cap or checking for a cross threaded cap).

l Verify that the CV solenoid is properly seated on the EVAP canister (if possible).

l Visually inspect for cut or loose connections to fuel vapor hoses/tubes in following locations:

-- EVAP canister to EVAP canister purge valve.

-- EVAP canister to fuel vapor vent valve assembly.

-- fuel vapor control valve tube assembly to fuel tank (if applicable).

l Check for fuel filler pipe damage.

If I had pics to I',m sure would help. The next requires leak testers according to the manual

But the is a couple of connection and devices on top of the tank yes next to the floor pan. I've been lucky after 10 years and nothing yet like this!! where the wood?

Locate a mechanic who has a smoke machine to perform a leak test of the evaporative emissions system.

Based on your description, I'd suspect a problem with the filler tube (possibly corroded) , the filler tube seal (donut), or a failed line or seal from one of the tank connections on the top of the tank.

A smoke test will make it easy to see where the leak is occuring.

FWIW, the EVAP test is much more difficult to get to run during the winter months due to lower temperatures.

Corrosion ARghhhh!

Corrosion ARghhhh!

Steve you and I both are so use to salt corrosion and now here that brine is umpteen more corrosive! Grrrr! Anti car buff's
Wonder if anyone offers a affordable Saturday mechanic smoke machine. Never watched anyone use one but talked to couple of service managers "it's the only way as far as I'm concerned". I doesn't take much of an evap leak to trip the OBD II code.
My dauther-in-laws Dodge mini-van has evap code set and come to find out Dodge has TSB too revise software.
Antiramie has yours even been in the salt??? Not that it won't corrode but the salt states sure speeds in up!
