I got that too when I wanted to see the engine in the G8 at the Detroit show. According to the person I asked, they can't open the hoods for safety reasons.

If that's true, then the world is completely retarded.

Although, I guess it's no big deal, since the trend of covering whole engine bays with slabs of plastic is pretty much the norm, we probably didn't miss out on much.

On a side note, I was able to pop the hood on an Audi RS4 'vert at the show. The crowd arround the car instantly trippled in size. That V8 is one work of art and should be displayed at all times.
