Anyone have any idea how much the labor costs would be on replacing a power steering pump on a 97 Contour, ATX, Duratec. Wheel is real tough to turn when cold and now I get a burning smell after I shut the engine off. I have seen smoke as well. Car has 253K miles.

Thanx

Try changing the power steering fluid first. Use a synthetic fluid, such as Mobil 1 ATF. Fresh fluid, and fluid that is better able to handle cold temperatures may be all you need.

It leaked 2 years ago and I used Lucas PS Stop and that did the trick. I'm pretty sure it's seen better days since I get the burning smell and occassional smoke.

The "burning smell and occassional smoke" could be it leaking again on the belt and pulley.

I'm guessing that other than replacing the pump, there is no alternative. If so, what is the amount of hours in labor to have it done. Pump is relatively cheap at $45.

I'd like to know how hard it is as well. Mine is leaking from somewhere around the pump as there's tale-tale signs of leakage of it coming down the front timing cover. I'm positive it's PS fluid as the resevoir is a little low on fluid now and was full when I bought the car about three weeks ago.

It doesn't look like fun replacing it as it's really cramped in the engine compartment. And here I thought working on a blown four valve Cobra motor was cramped lol.

its not a hateful job, just use a piece of wood and a jack to support the oil pan(duratec pan is beefy and disturbingly overbuilt) take that motor mount off, pull the serpantine belt, undo the lines to the pump, pull the bolts, prolly an hour or 2.
