Quick Intake question?

Hi Connor, welcome to the CEG! You should put your year and type of tranny in your sig so that we know what you are working with.

You are right on track with everything that you said. You can easily just use a 45 off of the plenum. It isn't 3" though. I think it may be 3.25 or 3.5". My CAI had an adapter off of the plenum to fit the 3" pipe that I was using.

Just try to keep any severe bends (over 45) away from the MAF.

Also, so you don't get flamed... The plenum sits on the throttle body (TB for short). We don't have a carb. ;)

A UDP is a great way to get more power for not much cash. If your Contour was built before 1998, you should also consider taking off your intake manifold and cleaning it. It's amazing how badly the EGR system gunks up an intake manifold.

Later,
Ben

Okay, so TB instead of carb. I've been working with lawn mowers, weed wackers, pocket bikes, mopeds, and RC cars so far in my life, and they all have carbs. I also put my car's specs in my sig.

Okay, so a standard 3" elbow won't work coming off the plenum. I guess I had read that the plenum is 3.5", because somebody mentioned a downspout adater that's 3-4" being a little too big on the plenum, so an extra piece of hose was put in to fill the space. I'm guessing they don't make 3.5-3" 45* elbows, do they? So that would be the tricky part of the whole thing. Any suggestions on how to do this?

Also, post '98 tour so cleaning intake won't help much (atleast that's what you made it sound like).

Thanks a lot, Connor

Yeah the 3-3.5" coupler is really hard to find. The "downspout connector" I found at Lowe's (you can probably find it at any decent hardware store) is really thin and flexible and it only cost me $2 .

As you can tell, it is being flexed a bit on my setup, which is why I'm happy I have it. If I had a thick "high quality" coupler, I probably wouldn't be able to have my intake configured as it is.

Yeah the 98+ Contours stay pretty clean.

I used a reducer off of the plenum and then an elbow right after it. It wasn't the cheapest way to go but it looked and worked great.

Here's a pic of my insanely expensive setup...

Alright, thanks guys. Your CAI (actually a true cold air intake ) looks expensive buy it also looks like it works good. I'm not ready to go all out yet, so I'll see what I can find. I"m starting my new job at ACE hardware today, maybe I can find an adapter there. So its 3.5" down to 3"?

Also, where would be a good place to get the 3" pipe, a 45* elbow, and the breather filter?

Thanks, Connor

Matt, I was talking about button's blue contraption he built himself, its s true CAI which you don't see too much of around here. I was shocked.

So while wandering the isles of ACE today organizing stuff so we look like the perfect store (was so boring I was eyeing the hammers as a means of commiting suicide), I came ocross the 3"-4" rubber adapter. Its $9, but I get a 20% discount. I also found a 3-3 straight fitting for like $6. They have this stuff there that looks interesting, but I forgot whst it was called (I'll check tomorrow). It looked like a roll of rubber (about the thickness of bike inertube) and it said "resistant to heat, gas, and oil" on it. I couldn't tell if it was adhesive or not, but it looks like a good way to fill the gap between the 3.5" plenum and the 4" adapter. Any ideas about this? We also have fiberglass screen in small rolls *coughmeshgrillcough*. I might have to pick up a roll of that, some super glue, and some flat black Krylon fusion paint for the front end of mah ride. Basically to sum it up, I'm taking full advantage of my 20% discount.
