I am about to Finlay replace my outer Tie rods. the only questions i have is:

1. do i really need to replace the locking nut?

2. i was told once to use loctite on the tie rod, do i really need this? i mean it is going to have an alignment after.

i did a fair amount of searching but came up with nothing. I'm sure i missed something. well thanks for all your help -Jon

no you don't need to replace the jamb nut.

also I wouldn't us locktite at all. that is wha tthe jamb nut is for ...

i would have to agree on not using loctite. and I'll inspect my jamb nuts to see if they do in fact Need replacing. last time i looked they were in good shape. thanks!

this is a dumb question but o well. the tie rods are not reverse thread or anything right? I'm probably just a weakling. yes i have PB on it.

no they are not. but if you have going on what happened to one of mine it isn't good. some of the threads where messed up and rusty. we had to cut the tie rod off and the new one was difficult to thread on.

great. both of mine are very hard to get off. i haven't even got the lock nut to turn yet. but again as far as rust the threads looks good but of course there could easily be rust inside.

i ended up having to use a pipe wrench and push on it with my feet while sitting on the ground and holding onto the fender. it was the only way i could get enough force to break them loose.

yea its not going to come loose. great and my drive shaft boots are leaking something horrible.

as for the pipe wrench (monkey wrench). did you still have the tie rod in the knuckle? because i don't want to damage the stud on the tie rod end if i cant get it off. i hate shops and don't want to have to take my car to one if i cant get them off.

yeah, i still had the tie-rod in the knuckle, although i had already loosened the nut holding it into the knuckle.

thanks to striker2 i was able to break them loose with a pipe wrench. after that it was smooth sailing. a normal wrench may have worked if it was long enough and someone held it for me while i pushed on it with my feet. thanks again

Did you guys put any PB blaster on there before trying to take it off?? I swear by that stuff... it's amazing.

tons of it.

x2 and let it sit all day. the jamb nut was torqued against the outer tie rods. so you just have to break that bond.

lots over multiple days. the threads inside had gotten boogered up and rusty. tie rod end wouldn't move for anything, nor the jamb nut.
