San Diego contour SVT

Just think of it as a nice vacation Chinaski. Its too bad though, I was hoping you could hook me up with the employee discount .

I have a beat up helmet if you want to borrow it to run down at qualcomm. I was wearing it when I laid down a 1970's honda cx500 and it served me well. It was actually the bike to the left of the contour in the pic attached to the top of this thread.

That 3l sounds like a beast, which swap did you go with?

all the port matching. it looks like a 2.5 but rumbles like a 3.0. I almost have my second swap done. I hate messing with half shafts taking off all the suspension stuff. really annoying but almost done with yet another car.

So since I'm a total rookie when it comes to mechanics, what would be the best (read cheap and easy) swap for me to attempt? Im not looking for a significant gain in power or anything(would be cool though), what I really need is an alternative to a stock engine replacement and maybe a nice new clutch.

I have an Engine lift and stand, jack, jackstands, ramps, plenty of spare time, and a garage full of basic tools, a bit messy but still... Knowing what you know after two swaps what would be the biggest obstacle for a beginner like me?

Having all the materials was a pain. You would need the Ford CD which sort of gives you a step by step for the process of taking out the engine and putting it back in. It would be really hard if you did it without anyone who knows about engines. I am not sure what kind of swap you are looking to do becuase each one has money that you will have to spend. I would just go searching in the 3L forum and possibly post in there once you have read about each of the swaps you could do.

I want to do a full swap with either the 02+ taurus, or the 03 escape. I would like the taurus because from my understanding i could basically swap oil pans, get the fuel rail brazed, grind out some tabs, then drop in, tune and go.

Dont get me wrong Ive done tons of searching on this forum and the old forum, and have found tons of reference points, but nothing complete. Also a lot of the pictures are invalid links and to be honest for every one post of real hard info there are 3 pages of squabbling. And literally every time an inexperienced person asks for advice they get flamed hard whether or not they get help.

My budget is about 2k. And this will either be the best, or worst financial decision I've ever made

anyone know if the 3.0 swap will pass smog? cuz if it doesnt, i dont know if you would want to put that motor in if you cant get it to pass and be street legal. ill probably end up doin the swap sometime in the future if it will pass the smog test.
also, why is pickin up a 3.0 from a '99 taurus a bad decision?

The swap is against CA smog laws as the only motor allowed to be in is the motor that comes from the factory, so at least dealers cant install them legally. However I read that the 3L will pass smog just fine and pretty much looks like the 2.5 anyways. So easily workable.

Also all the pre-2001 taurus 3.0's did not have a water pump that could be driven off the cam and had to be modified with an electric waterpump. Still doable but more work I believe is the issue.

Now if only there was a 3 Liter full swap for dummies book. Something like http://www.therob.com/enginebuilding/pull.php except for contours. Its all in laymans terms with color pictures and tons of info all in one place, without even a search button

why is pickin up a 3.0 from a '99 taurus a bad decision?

i read in a post abouth it, personally i have the 3.0 block with svt heads from a 99 taurus 3 times i replaced the rod bearings, and this is my four time i need to buy rod bearings and replace, i am a drag guy, i read abouth the escape 3.0 swap is better than taurus for the oil pan and other stuff, personally dont know (i have a moroso oil accumulator in my garage never installed because dont know how to) i always make the oil changes at 3000 milles or less with mobil 1 full syntetic 10w30. and k&n opil filters. , personally the 3.0 hybrid is a beauty when you race , you can feel the power on it. , thats the main reason i still own my svt after many and many problems with it.

Well I have had a change of priority, I have decided to offload my junk and use the money for college. It appears I missed to boat on the coolest car I ever owned.

hah. you'd give up if you were me, lets just say that.... I just got rid of the saturn and mustang, and will be tooling around in my purple smashed up minivan for a while. But Tomorrow morning I will be going down to bonita to meet with the guy, Alex about the engine. Ive actually been discussing it with him all along, He just posted it on CL because I told him probably not. It was a rear end accident i believe, But ill have more details tomorrow.
