I have a 96 mystique and i currently have problems with down shifting into lower gears. What i mean by this is that when i try to get into second i have to do it a very low speed if not it grinds as far as first gear i have to come to a complete stop to get it into that gear. All other gears work fine its just down shifting into 2nd and first if anybody has had this problem or no what it might be can you hit me back it be mostly appreciated.:shrug:
 
wow i thought this was usal mines doing the same for first have to pretty much stoped before down shifting...now i now i guess
 
as for having trouble getting it into first gear check the engine/trans mounts and roll restrictors, having a 96 you have a rod shift mtx and if any of the mounts are to worn it could cause shifting problems.

the grinding going into second is most likely the syncro. mine only does it on upshifts when it is very cold. fresher fluid does help but as noted it is a bandaid to the real problem ...
