My 98 CSVT was stuttering around 3,500-4,000 RPM's but now, every so often it does it at lower RPM's.
All of a sudden, the RPM's will just drop to -0-, then restart just as quickly..Like someone threw a switch and turned off the engine.

What may cause such a thing?

This brings back memories of when I was a service writer. By "stuttering" do you mean an engine miss or more of a surge? By RPMs dropping to zero do you mean the engine quit or the tach just indicated zero? By restart do you mean you turned the ignition to start or that the engine came back to life on its own? If you answered yes to at least two of these questions you need to check electrical connections and the first ones I'd check are the ones to and from the battery.

Engine stalls momentarily and tach displays zero also.
It comes back on with no intervention on my part.
Just shuts down and comes back within a second...Like someone turned off a switch and turned it right back on again.

the fact that it happens at 3500-4K rpms leads me to believe it has to do with your IMRC, your tach acting up leads me to believe alternator.

But im probably way off.

Well, if it happens to cut out at night and your lights go out, that would be a great indicator pointing to a battery connection. The IMRC woudn't make the tac drop to zero. Besides checking battery connectivity is the easiest thing to check so it might as well be the first.
