Thinking about moving to North/South Carolina

I'm just about done with NYC. I can't stand it anymore. I've been looking at some apartment listings in both places and pricing seems reasonable for what you get but I have no idea what part of either state I would want to move to.

I'm pretty much looking to get away from the cold and the snow...so wherever is warmest throughout the year is where i want to be.

Another "requirement" is i need to be by the water. I live by the beach now, and i'm not willing to compromise much on that. I have to have easy access to the water. I'm within walking distance now, and i'd like to keep it that way.

I really have no idea where to start as far as the job market goes. Not worried about schools....don't have any kids. I've looked at places in Wilmington, NC and in SC i've looked at some places in mt pleasant, which is a little expensive and also beaumont.

Soooo...I guess what i'm looking for here is advice on where I should be looking. I'm not looking to be in an overcrowded city area, but, people/businesses near by would be nice. I fix computers for a living..so i'd be stuck knocking on doors of businesses for a while and mailing out post cards until i could build up some clientelle. Hopefully my savings will hold out until such a time or i'll have to find a real job. in which case a good job market would also help. And a low cost of living, obviously.

someone point me in the right direction please! ny is my home but i really can't stand to bear anymore winters or deal with the douchebags that live here. :blackeye:

Ive lived in SC, but in the top middle of the state and I dont know too much about the coastal part of either state. 69boss302 just moved down to SC and hes relatively close to the beach and he could offer some good info.

To give you a reference point on where to start I'd say maybe Myrtle Beach. Good amount of night life, and well, its the beach.

yeah myrtle beach i've looked at a few places as well. i need to call an actual realtor down there...just googling apartment listings has gotten me some misleading results...for example a development that's supposed to be near some sort of lake but nowhere near water on the map they provide!

though there are some really nice places that have 2-3x the space you'd get here in SI for less money!

i'll have to pm mike...

this would probably be after the new year. i've got some more saving to do...

lol i was just thinking about that...i'd need a second car i could use for work purposes...though some sort of wagon or hatch would be best - an SVT did pop into my mind!

found some nice house listings in myrtle beach in the 100-120k range...i'd love ot put down 20% and have a $550/mo mortgage but that'd leave me almost no savings left! i need to find guaranteed income!

i realize it's bible country...no beer on sunday wouldn't bother me much, as there's always beers in the fridge anyway.

I guess I'm a bit bored right now and cruising other forums.

Like TGO is intending to do, I moved from a big city to a more rural setting in TX, and haven't looked back. I swear, I will never move back to a big metropolitan unless someone offers me an incredible salary; otherwise it's just not worth it. That, and I loathed the snow and wind chills that would peel your face raw in the North.

Sorry, there is no actual value in this post in terms of recommendations. Good luck with the relocation, definitely a wise decision. Also, southern women live up to their hype! ;)

well, leaving behind my family is going to be really tough. especially my cousin's who are like brothers to me and my grandparents who are both in their mid 80's (really don't want to miss any of what time i have left with them)...but i think i have to leave this place and go somewhere i can start building a life for myself.

Mt. Pleasant SC is a nice place and its where i bought my SVT. Some other places to check out would be probably Lexington and Greenville. They both are decent size but not huge. Lexington is about 20 min from Columbia and Greenville is a pretty big income area, but I don't know how much it costs to live there. You could always check out Aiken too :)

Right across the way from Charleston and one of my favorite places in the world. Both my dad and brother are firefighters for the town.
It'll take some getting used to compared to NY. Much, much slower and laid back. But believe it or not, I run into a lot of NY transplants that stay for good.
No beer sales on Sunday still in the state. And as far as I know, BJ's are still illegal as well.

slow and laid back is what i'm looking for. my biggest concern i guess is earning money once i'm there.

i've actually been thinking about buying a house, and staying up here for a few months to replenish my savings. maybe even doing the back and forth thing for a while.

They have sold beer on Sundays here in Beaufort County for as long as I can remember! Lol, and Hilton Head Island, Bluffton, & Beaufort, SC all have places right by the water! :)

Not too bad in these times... Depends on your price range... and exactly how close your wanting to be by the water.. Look online! Zip codes 29928, 29910, and more, Like I said... Hilton Head Island, Beaufort, & Bluffton.. and even Savannah, GA

How is house hunting?

I wish I could move down there and TGO, when you move, make sure you come on out to our Dragon Run, you'll be right in the area:cool:

lol i will

thanks for those zip codes, it helps a lot!

at first i was a little frightened by a quick google of hilton head island...$3-4 million dollar homes! lol! but after looking at condo's mostly i was able to find some small starter homes right around 100k.

i had focused on myrtle beach because of it's proximity to charleston...but i guess hilton head island is about the same distance.

you're from the area...is it sparsely populated? like i said, for work i'd want to be relatively close to civilization...lol. some sort of "town" area that's got stores/businesses. i'm on the road a lot as it is...it would suck to have to drive 100 miles to get to my nearest client you know?

everything is more expensive in Hilton Head, even a Bigmac. I'd find out how much real estate taxes are if you havn't yet. Its a really nice place though, I just couldn't afford to live there.
