I took my car to get the tranny flushed and tranny fluid got all over the header wrap on the down pipe and its obviously smoking. I went this morning and bought some header wrap and re-wraped as much of it as I could with the front end on jack stands. They are obviously a tight fit so I could only get to where the front header tubes collect together, and started right above the o2, Its still smoking some and I took it for a drive after and the egt's were between 13000-sometimes spiking at 14000 in W.O.T, when stopped at a light the egt's were around 10000-12000.

I am wondering if its still smoking cause its brand new header wrap:shrug: Also if the egt's are spiking like that cause maybe I didnt wrap them tight enough:shrug: I have been searching all over the net for anything and havent found any awnsers yet. I am a newb at fi so please help me out vets.

Ok tell me if I am correct in my assumptions, The "glue" in the tape is smoking off and will for a short while, and the egt's are up cause I may have wrapped it too much, I overlaped the wraps about 1/2". I finally found a thread in a corvette forum that says you are only supposed to overlap 1/4" and it will smoke for a few hours after install. Is this correct:shrug:

You are correct Ryan. I have a good amount of experience wrapping Bike headers. It varies by wrap manufacturer.

It will burn off after a couple of hours.

Ok cool, thanks man. Then this week I will remove what I did and re-wrap it only 1/4" overlap and go drive it for an hour plus and see if that solves my problem.

Does the wrap need to be super tight:shrug:

Yes, The tighter the better. You can't make it to tight.

yeah, mine smoked for alittle while the first few times I dronve the car. I also had that high temp paint on the pipes and that tends to smoke also ...

ryan you also have one to many zero's in your temp numbers ...

1,300 not 13,000 degrees

Yes and pour a quart through it to get rid of anything that may have been in there from when the axle stripped slightly.

Ok I rewrapped everything last night and no more smoke, buuuuut the egt's are spiking in W.O.T at 1,400. While sitting they are at 1,000-1,200 and when cruising they are at around 1,300 why is this?

And they will cool back down when the header wrap settles in or burns on:shrug: Cause before the egt's never got that high.

Before I never ever saw it get up to 1,400, 1,300 was the highest, Maybe its also cause its getting hot outside now too, its been 80-90 degrees lately here.

Where is your EGT probe located?

I could very well be that you are retaining more heat in the exhaust at the point where the EGT probe is now.

The egt probe hasnt moved, its always been in the same location Stazi had it in. Its located right below where the front header tubes all collect into 1.

I didn't ask if it had been moved... i just asked where it was.

Wrapping will raise EGT's. It's kind of the point.

Ok well everything is fine, I went and drove it around for about an hour this morning and then this morning to work. The a/f is right where it needs to be at around 11.9-12.5 and the egt's at cruising are around 1,200 and in W.O.T at about 1,350-1,400. Talked to Stazi and he said thats right where it needs to be, guess my worrying was for nothing, but better safe than sorry right.
