The bolts have loctite on them from the factory.
As stated earlier by someone you need a good 1/2" drive 6 point socket and as long a ratchet or breaker bar you can use in that tight area in the wheel well. Leverage is everything if you don't have an impact gun.
But see thats just the thing. I shouldnt have to go to all this trouble, JUST TO CHANGE BRAKES. God it sucks....

Ford gets thier brake calipers from the same suppliers as everyone else does, and they get thier bolts from the same suppliers everyone else does.

Your contour has brake calipers from ATE (Continental-Teves here in the US) and guess what, my old XR4Ti also had ATE calipers, and holy cow, my BMW M3 ALSO has ATE calipers . . . There are standard design practices for parts like brakes. If your car has an issue, its most likely due to the way you, or a previous owner worked on it.

Actually.. now that I recall when we did my warmonger front brake upgrade 2 weeks ago, this was exactly what we had to do.. a 1/2" drive w/ socket and a breaker bar. There was little room since the car was up on jack stands to use the bar but as soon as the bolt broke loose, breaker bar was no longer needed, etc.

I did not read cnewton saying he used a 6-point boxed end wrench. That is most certainly the problem. Using a 12-point (or worse open ended wrench) will strip almost any tight fitting bolt. That is just how things are. And sadly, I have experienced that in the past. . (15mm oil drain plug  ). No more open ended or 12-point wrenches for me!

Good luck on the "new" purchase. On that note, this thread is done.

Thank you to all who posted suggestions on how to tackle the brake caliper issue.
