Want To Take Down The Cobalt Ss

im not sure if this will work with contours as i am new to them, but from my past experiance with hondas there is alot to be had with gearing. going to a 4:9:1 final drive and also switching a few other main gears really helps accelaration, with hondas. do some research as to contour gear ratios, maybe you may find someone who builds transparts. just like putting 4:11's in a rwd car. combine a nice 3L build with a built trans and you might have something. huge horsepower numbers are nice but if you cant get it to the ground whats the point. just my .02

Gearing options with the contour: Normal Gearing. Or.... Normal Gearing with the Zetec Final Drive.

The gearing is fine in our cars.

IIRC the Colbalt SS ran like a 6.5 second 0-60. Understanding it's not a drag car, it still shows that it's not really all that fast. Quick...but not really fast. I think I could spend the money a lot better. But that's just my opinion. GM had a chance to get into the sport compact market with a bang, and instead they half-a$$ed it. Hooray for GM.:blackeye:

ive been in them and they are pretty nice espically the top grade much much much better then the stupid caviler which was pos but this colbalt is a huge upgrade in their product line

!!!!!

!!!!!

Hey i had a cavalier and you know what IT SUCKED BALLS!!!!!! then i got my lovely 99 SVT Contour

I've driven both cars. Stock for stock the SS is definitely faster, but not by much. The SVT has a better top end so if you really want to beat the SS stock for stock you can take him above 130mph:laugh: . The SS definitely handles well but I don't think it would really beat an SS on the roadcourse unless it was equipped with the optional LSD, even then I don't know if it could take an SVT with good suspension.

But to answer your question to take out a stock SS supercharged, I'd do a 3 liter, headers, intake, pulley and a 50 shot. That'd make him work a little harder for the win. O and don't forget the LSD and a good tune to actually squeeze all those extra ponies out and get it all to the ground. If you really wanna be tricky throw on some drag radials. Also beware his downshift if you do highway racing, they pull hard as f*** in 3rd and 4th gear.

The same can be said about quite a few of our members vehicles. Freeway killers...

just, not so much off the line..

Man i can smoke thos ss cobalts. I just say hey kit. It says what michael. Smoke this SS. And my svt just turns into this jet plane on wheels. It's amazing.........

Then that would mean that there are CEG'ers that race on the streets. And we all know that the world would come crumbling to an end if we had that! :help:

Ahem...

[soapbox/nose in the air]

There... better? :D

LOL, you should know by now that I'm the LAST person to cry about the mention of street racing. Of everyone on CEG, I'm probably the biggest advocate of it. Shhhhhh, don't tell anyone!! Hopefully someone buys my SVT, so I can drive my grandpa Lincoln, and not be so tempted.

I found some quick references that said the 2005 Cobalt SS S/C has a curb weight of 2806 lbs and the 2000 Contour SE weighs 3030. So, you could find 250 lbs to loose. Then race with an almost empty tank, having filled his up for him.

That should help bring your horsepower to weight ratio closer. 250lbs is quite a lot. You might have to do things like dump the A/C.

Dump the AC?

Wow, a whole 22-24 pounds.

I'd rather remove something else for the same weight (switch to different rimtire combo will improve that dramatically) than get rid of a properly working AC system.

rear seat weighs 50 pounds spare tire 10-20? passenger seat 20+ dash all interior trim ur up to well over 150lbs but see i plan on just getting everything nice and looking good inside and out then ill worry about power. by that time the turbo kits will be out and ill be happy

I was just saying that in order to get a lot of weight out of a car you have to give up things that you might want. It is all a trade off. It is less expensive to remove some weight then get new headers for instance.
If I ever move out of Washington the A/C might be worth more to me also.

200 to 250 lbs lighter give you the equivalent of like 18Hp on the weight/Hp scale, but with other upgrades it could give you an advantage.

Anything much more aggressive (I don't see 99.9% of people removing anywhere NEAR 250 pounds) and you end up with a vehicle that has an "additional" 25-30hp and looks like a pogostick from all the crap you pulled.

Come on Ray!!! I thought you were a real Hotrodder!!! I'm sure I have lost some weight off of my SVT. Let's see: CF Hood, Fiberglass bumper, No A/C (or any of the piping/lines for that matter), no fender liners, no spare/jack, no trunk carpet, and ummmmm no IMRC cover!! Then I added Buckshot Block, head work with ST220 V.S., replaced every moving part in the motor (and I mean everything), Rebuilt tranny from Greencountry Transmissions, Quaife, Spec Stage 3, B&M STS ( not really a mod in my opinion ) and I'm still running the factory intake setup [oh:no]. Removed all catalytic converters and added some mediocre suspension. I ran a 13.98 in the 1/4. Guess what!?? I have still been beaten by a Cobalt SS/SC. They are crap slow off the line even with the LSD, but when that 3rd gear kicks in on those....look the **** out!!!! They pull real hard with very few mods. I believe this guy I ran had some sort of boost modification. It was pretty sick. The moral of this story is that even with all of the money that can be invested in our cars, there is a lot more bang for the buck to be had for the Cobalts when boosted....and A/C is for pussies!!! LOLOLOLO!

the rear seat doesnt weight 50lbs, i call BS!

anyhow....my SVT beat a cobalt ss with an exhaust and intake with a 50 shot and bad clutch. they do move, especially when they start turnin up the boost and gettin em tuned....beware.
