Well, Edmunds likes it.

Just in case you're all thinking about buying the 4 cyl and going power crazy. I read an article that dissected the engine and it's an open block design.

So don't get your hopes up for anything over 400hp w/o dropping a ton of money into it.

A few tuners have already gone past that with a more efficient turbo setup, more boost and some tuning so I wouldnt put a cap on it yet.

The fact that you two continued to take me seriously has made me lol the last few days of this thread. ;)

you've only had my attention for a day or so, and even then it was cause i either said something or stabbed myself in the eye with a sharpie...

if by open block you mean an open deck block...yeah it's pretty much the same thing with the R.

seems like the main problem is that the sleeves are too thin, but also that coolant doesn't really flow too great once it gets inside the block. it leads to hot spots and failures that way.

anyway, the only solution for anyone looking for mucho hp is to re sleeve the block.

are there people who have gone above the 400hp mark? Sure. Have most blown their engines? yup.

it all depends on the quality of the components themselves. hopefully hyundai planned on people modifying the cars when in the design stages, but it's doubtful. which would suck.

Like TGO mentioned.

It's not about making more than 400hp (which is just a rough number anyway). It's about making 400hp every day for a year and not exploding the engine.

With an open block the liners just don't have enough stability to handle high cylinder pressures.

It's not gonna be an evo that can make 800hp on the stock block so just don't get your hopes up too high for the turbo 4. Granted 400hp is plenty for most people anyway...
