Wrecked car, need advice on radiator replacement..

Bad IAC valve.

Where's that located?
If you have a V6, it is by the firewall next to the EGR valve.
Picture in this how to for UIM/LIM rebuild.

If you have a I-4, it is by the starter. You need to access from the bottom of the vehicle.
Zetec IAC location.

For the Zetec I-4, you need to access the IAC from the bottom of the car.

"Replacing the IAC gasket:

Over time, the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve becomes sticky due to buildup from the EGR and PCV systems. It can stick partially open such that idle quality is adversely affected, and engine RPM's will not drop below 1500. For a while, blipping the throttle will restore normal idle, but this only works for so long.

The fix is to remove the IAC valve by unbolting the two 8mm bolts that hold it on and disconnected the wiring plug. If you are careful enough, replacement of the gasket will not be necessary. The gasket costs less than US $1.00, so it is no tragedy if you destroy it. Once the valve is off, spray it out with some carb/intake cleaner and make sure any gunky residue is gone. Reattach, and you are done. It is a lot cheaper than a new IAC, which runs around US $70. Note: Ford claims the IAC cannot be cleaned, but this is not true in my experience." Ray.

Location of the IAC for the Zetec.

"It's on the back side of the intake plenum under the throttle body area." DESIGN.

I looked at the Haynes manual and the Zetec IAC valve is located next to the starter. Below are the steps from the 1996 Ford CD to remove it .

Idle Air Control (IAC) Valve


Removal

1. Disconnect battery ground cable

2. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube and resonator assembly.
3. Disconnect the main chassis vacuum line.

4. Disconnect the ignition coil and radio interference capacitor wiring.

5. Remove the fuel line bracket retaining bolt.

6. On 2.0L engine equipped vehicles, raise vehicle on hoist.
7.
7. Disconnect the engine control sensor wiring or fuel charging wiring (depending upon application) from the idle air control valve (IAC valve) at the idle air control valve connector.

8. On 2.5L engine equipped vehicles, remove retainer for engine control sensor wiring from the upper retaining stud bolt.

9. Remove the two idle air control valve retaining bolts or stud bolt (depending upon application).

10. Remove the idle air control valve and idle air control valve gasket.

Installation

1. Note: If scraping is necessary, be careful not to damage idle air control valve or intake manifold idle air control valve gasket surfaces or drop material into intake manifold.

Clean idle air control valve gasket mating surfaces.

2. To install idle air control valve, reverse Removal procedure. Tighten the fuel line bracket bolt to 8-12 N-m (71-106 lb-in).

3. On 2.5L engine equipped vehicles, tighten the retaining bolt and stud bolt to 8-12

4. On 2.0L engine equipped vehicles, tighten the idle air control valve retaining bolts to 8-11 N-m (71-97 lb-in).

Magically, the car starts like normal now. I've been driving it in-town for the last week. The radiator fan is missing a fin and no longer functions, so I'll definitely have to replace that. Another vehicle is not an option, sadly.

So, it runs. It drives.. but I need to make repairs to make it look normal-ish again.

Here's my list. I'll need you guys to add what you think I'll pay at the junkyard for the interior stuff and what all I need to get (and possibly how to get it out, specifically, the airbags?)

New driver side front tire *MUST*
Front-end alignment.
Radiator fan

As far as aesthetic things go:
Windshield
Front Driver side fender
Driver door shell

My main concern now will be replacing the airbags, as I think that'll take a chunk of money and time.. and naturally, I'm nervous about it. How much are these things going to run me from a junkyard, do you all think?
 
What I really need to figureo ut how to do is make the airbags.. erm.. not be noticeable? Whether through replacing them or just getting covers. Not sure, but I think the dash will have to be removed for the passenger side bag?

I figured out that my head hit the steering wheel prior to the airbag deploying.. hah. The blood was on the steering wheel cover (the part that blows open) and the BACK side of the airbag. It couldn't have been on the cover unless I hit it first, before it blew open. Grr.

Again, safety is not the concern here. I just need to make this thing last another month or so. I have around $350 to spend on it.. hah.
 
I hate to bump again, but the fun starts in 4 hours. I'll be starting with all new tires (tread was down to like 4/32). New radiator fan (mine stopped working, a fin broke off in the wreck). Front-end alignment. Junkyard trip for interior parts.

Through searching, I've found that the passenger side airbag is mounted, the a cover is placed over it. The driver's side airbag has the cover attached.

I've decided to replace the driver's side airbag, and get a new cover for the passenger side.


I know how to remove the driver's side airbag, but how do I remove the cover on the passenger side?

If you were wearing your shoulder and lap belt properly your head would not have hit the steering wheel. You are lucky that the air bag did not break your neck when it deployed. I'm glad you and your girl survived without major injuries. Dan
 
I think you have to replace an air bag control module also, not just the airbag.

Here's a quote I found searching:

If the job involves replacing an exploded air bag, be certain to check and replace the following: the clock spring, sensors and wiring, steering wheel and column, and the electronic control unit. On some cars, like the Mercury Mystique, the steering column must be replaced when the air bag has deployed.

Thanks for that info :)

I *was* wearing my seatbelt, just not the lap belt.

Anyone know the easiest way to remove the airbag cover from the passenger side?
