How do you like the astronomical repair bills? I'd advise against a rig like that if you're doing it on anything near a shoestring budget. Parts are exorbitant.

Sound advice. If you go older, select a platform that's solid and has had years of R&D put into it. Take a Crown Vic or a Town Car, for example. Real solid cars that have been around for years (the designs in question date back to 1979 and 1980, respectively. Both are powered by the venerable 302 Windsor, which goes back to the Sixties, and have proven AOD transmissions.
