Zetec lost compression

I had a 73 chev pu w/ a 350 get a hydrolock, but not in a usual way. This occured because of a hole in the fuel pump diaphram. Several cylinders filled with gas. Not knowing this I just got in to go someplace and tried to start it....... nothing happened. The engine didn't turn over I could hear the solenoid kick in on the starter, then nothing. Finally after checking everything I could think of, I found what happened, pulled the spark plug siphened the gas out through the SP hole and turned the enging over by hand several times. Changed the fuel pump and the oil everything was fine after that. It was a bit scary for a while.....

I know I hadn't either until it happened to me. Apparently it is not that uncommon in the old small blocks chevy's. According to the guy at the auto parts store when I got the new fuel pump. The thing was off just sitting and the gas just ran into the engine through the little hole in the diaphram.

You didn't have to siphone the gas out. Once the pugs were out, all you had to do is to crank the engie over with the starter. It woud clear out the cylinders in 2 revolutions. Putting rags on top of the empty plug holes would catch all the shooting gas too.
 
Sssheeeeeeschhhhh, now you tell me, why didn't you say that back in 76 when it happened?????? Here I went to all that trouble concerned about all the fumes and any electrical spark creating a boom involving my truck.. never ran across anything like this before and it ruined my Saturday... and now you tell me I did more work than I needed to..... Do you realize how much beer time I lost...... Now I'm all mad at myself for wasting that time! I guess I better go have an adult beverage to make up for it.....lol :laugh:
