2010 Ford Fusion

Or maybe a car from Ford with the quality of my Volkswagen GLI & R32... and performance that's at least somewhere close to my R32, but with 4-doors.

If Ford made a car that rode and felt stiff like a GTI/GLI people would :censored::censored::censored::censored::censored: and moan about it even if the fit and finish were as good.

It seems you aren't keeping up on the direction most of the FoMoCo cars/trucks are all heading.

I know Ford is planning to bring some of its european cars here to the states... and that's a very good thing. I love my Contours; they are very european in performance and driving dynamics (no surprize there), but at a reasonable price. Not unlike say, a Volkswagen.

The unfortunite part is that Ford (so far) isn't planning to bring any of their larger foreign cars to the US, and, with my children getting bigger, I need to get a family car that's a little bigger than a Contour or GLI.

And before a get a bunch of posts saying I should buy a new Taurus SHO... it's just too big and too ugly. I was hoping the 2010 Fusion might fit the bill; it is after all much better looking than the current model, but it just isn't any fun to drive.

Now, if Ford imported some of their larger foreign cars (like the Mondeo or Falcon) I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

When I bought my SVT Contour (in January 1998) it was a legitimate competitor to the Audi A4 2.8 and BMW 328 (if you read the sidebar in Car & Driver's 1998 A4 2.8/328 comparison test you know what I'm talking about), but where those cars have moved forward in quality and performance the Fusion isn't even as good as its predecessor (the Contour).

DT.

Where are your statistics for that one? Everything I've heard lately puts Ford's initial quality on par with Toyota - best in the business. And as far as performance goes, the auto V6 Fusion of previous years (0-60 in 8.0, 1/4 mile in 15.8) walks all over the auto V6 Contour (8.7/16.7), and is almost on par with the 5 speed V6 (non-SVT) Contour (7.7/15.8).

And the new Fusion is even better.

I honestly dont care about initial quality ratings since you can rate it yourself the day you check it out and test drive it. I'm sure all of the VW owners with electrical problems were impressed with the rating their cars got for initial quality as well. :)

We'll disagree on the SHO but every mag I've read raves about the 2010 Fusion being fun-to-drive . That 3.5 Fusion GT despite being a 6spd ATX should be very fun.

I saw a black Fusion Sport on the road today, it was going the other way, but from the front it looked pretty damn nice. My mother loves her 07 V6 SEL, and it has had zero issues since she got it in June '07. When her lease expires this summer she'll probably end up in another Fusion. Probably not a Sport, but most likely the 240hp 3.0L.

As for the new SHO, I just hope it has some tricks up it's sleeve to offset it's size/weight.

I went to Engineering Open House at U of I. Drove an MKT there and the SHO back. I'm fully in love with SHO after my drive. Zero torque steer, surprisingly tight suspension, 0-60 time of 5.39 (my own run, not the official number), and a 1/4 mile of 13.77 @ 109 mph pulling 0.65 G's of acceleration (again my own run). AWD makes it impossible to break the tires loose. The launch isn't crazy, but once the turbos have a head of steam it pulls like hell. WOT through a 90 deg turn and the body barely rolls. 20s are hot too.
