Aluminum sill GB?

i think it will look alright w/o the 2 lines...but tomorrow or sunday, i should have a prototype/prototypeS made to show u guys how it turned out!

the only problem with the raised lines are that we would have to use much more aluminium and it would be just going to waste...unless we stamped it...but we can make them cheaper if we keep it all through the CNC machines
I agree with you Ben, it probably would get too costly. I was just curious to see what it would look like. I cant wait to see the prototype!

Yea neither can I. Also if you need another car to test fit them on you can send a prototype set my way :D I gladly help you out!

I also think it should read Contour SVT, as that is the way Ford has always referenced the car and that is how it is presented in all of the Ford brochures. Plus I think it looks better that way.

I notice 'SVT Contour' referenced officially more often than 'Contour SVT'. It's referenced in databases as Contour SVT for the sake of compatibility with the <model> <trim> format, but I believe the car's title is 'SVT Contour'.

Best source in my opinion: http://www.svt.ford.com/svtArchiveContour.asp

Yeah, I like it a lot. The lines that mart drew would be cool even if they were recessed. This would then match well with having lines on the rear sills. I agree they aren't needed on the front, but it might help tie things together if we (Ben) does a front and rear set.

sorry guys...the prototype didnt happen today...i still need to touch up the design and get it cut out...im sorry for those who have been waiting so long...it should happen very soon. There were some things which came up today which made it hard to get the design and prototype done...sorry

in my SVT history book, the official name is the "SVT Contour", not the Contour SVT. Just like the focus' official name is "SVT Focus" not "Focus SVT".
just my thoughts.

from fords site:

I stand corrected. I finally did some research myself and found that on the majority of the brochures it is referred to as "SVT Contour", but not all. However I still like the way "Contour SVT" looks.

However I don't believe everything in that website...

"With all three of its 2004 products on revised platforms and in new assembly plants for '05, SVT ended 2004 with nearly 145,000 sales over 12 years of production. "

SVT has not been discontinued quite yet. Who was behind the design and build of the new Cobra (don't say Shelby either, he helped but didn't design it)? Why do the valve covers say "Power by SVT" if SVT doesn't exist anymore??

I don't think that statement meant it was discontinued. I think it was just stating that it ended the year with those numbers...but I could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time.

It's the Special Vehicle Team Contour aka SVT Contour. However, every car database on the planet is designed for the <model> <trim> format, including Ford's, thus we see Contour SVT represented a lot, even if it's not how the car is intended to be referred to as.

I prefer SVT Contour myself.

I sent a message to http://www.e-clec-tech.com/smpakits.html concerning their EL panels. Here is the email and their answer. It would seem if we can get sills with the SVT Contour cut outs, the EL panel could be put under it. The only problem would be the length of the panel, about 3 3/4" long. I guess 2 together could be used.

My email:

I'm thinking of cutting thin sheet aluminum to use as a sill plate for my car. I will cut the car's emblem out of the plate and plan to put a piece of EL panel under the plate to illuminate the cutout of the emblem. My questions are:

1. How thick is the EL panel? It appears to be relatively thin since the ad states it can be cut with scissors.

2. If it is thin enough, is the connector on the panel thin enough also? I would put a layer of electrical tape on the top and bottom of the connector to prevent it from shorting out on the plate or the car body. There is no movement of the sill plate so there would be no problem with chafing. I'm thinking this way the connector is on the end.

I suppose I could use it if the connector was on the side. That way the connector would not be under the sill.

If this works out, alot of people I know would be interested. Thanks in advance.

Their answer:

Hi,
That sounds like a great project!

EL panels are commonly used for that purpose.

They are as thin as paper, so you can just use a pair of scissors to cut them.

Yes, the connectors are very small as well. You can just solder wires to them to get the thinnest possible size.

There are many sets of connectors along the edge of each panel. You only need one set. So you can choose the place you want it to be and just remove the others.

Thanks

I don't mind that the wording be either SVT Contour or Contour SVT, I guess. It could go either way really. Lets just pick something and go with it.

In response to the comment about the Shelby Mustang, there was one at the local dealership the other day and they also have SVT centercaps, but no hint of SVT inside (I couldn't see anything on the guages or floormats). SVT has been disbanded, but a couple of the former 'team' members have stayed on to help the company in its 'new direction'. The SVTOA newsletter has clear evidence to support that. Not only does the former chief engineer (Hou-Thai Tang or whatever his name is) talk about SVT being gone, but they also have been unloading all the paperwork and posters they've had stored up (hence the flood of the stuff on ebay all of a sudden  )

there are other sources of EL that have longer length... if they can sell a 6 ft strand of EL wire, they have to be able to make a 10 inch panel...

i really would like the EL cutout panels... but i have no money until i graduate and get a real job :blackeye:

I really dont care about the el panels I just want a killer set of door sills!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you planning on etching the logo into the sill or actually cutting the logo out? I'd personally prefer the logo to be cut out so I could put the EL panels in if I decided to. That way the guys who didn't want EL won't have to worry about the cost or hooking them up.

AND, what will be the overall size of the logo? I'll email these people again and see how much a panel would cost.
