The first street race occurred between a car and a horse drawn carriage and street racing has been with us ever since. I am also of the mind that this crack down on street racing is tantamount to the same sort of "feel good " legislation as additional gun laws and creating ethanol from corn are. It's not enough to say that what is needed is additional drag strips. Here in SoCal, with the relative expense of real estate, we're lucky to have the few race tracks we have considering the so called "car culture" the area is supposed to have. None of these tracks are drag strips, except for Los Angeles County Raceway, which is way out in the sticks, near Palmdale. Instead, they have to be fashioned from the track (or fairground) parking lots. Our three legitimate drag strips (Lions, Irwindale and OCIR) have long been buried by "progress" and any attempts at bringing "legal" street racing to the fore has been met with general public disdain and a "not in my backyard" proclamation because of the perceived "bad element" such events might bring. Car crusher laws will only create more carnage with owners fleeing rather than being captured much the same as the "three strikes" laws have done. All IMHO, of course.
