As you know motorcraft alternators don't come with pulleys. so i need to install it myself. I have no way of keeping the shaft from turning when trying to tighten down the pulley nut.

I don't have immediate access to a impact gun so it there anyway of doing this without one? If i did use an impact how the heck do i not go past 33 Ft/lbs?

I just bop them with the impact gun. I don't get overly concerned about the 33 ft/lbs in this application.

If you need to, swing by I can hit it with my impact gun. Im just down the road in Villa Park.

you can install the alternator and with the belt installed tighten the nut up. however you either need to use a wrench or drop the passanger side of the engine so you have clear access to the nut.

also the engine spins in the way that the nut tightens, so theroetically it can't loosen up, iirc.

i put a flathead screwdriver in on of the holes of the alt and loosen the nut.

I just need to tighten down the pulley on my new alternator. i got a new pulley. I would rather not sick anything in it. could easily damage it.

Typically auto part stores will install the pulleys. I know back in the day when I was ripping through alternators on my 85 Camaro Napa was installing the pulley on the new alternator for me. I brought my old one in and they swapped them out for me. Wouldn't hurt to give a few auto stores a call.

My neighbor let me use his impact gun. I just popped it twice and all is good and tight. I did check to make sure it was at least Tq'ed to 33ftlbs. holding the pulley with a strap wrench while using a Tq wrench. thanks everyone. Should have my car put back together tomorrow. Its effing cold at night.

wait they don't come with the pulley? I need to get a new alternator since my housing is cracked. It works but lights are dimmed and I am pretty sure it isn't putting out max voltage but I'm gonna check that theory. either way it needs to be done. How much extra is one with a pulley or do you just have to get the new pulley? Does it come with the new nut for it at least? Where did you get your motorcraft from>
