Hello,

My 2000 svt developed a rod knock last week and I've decided to go 3l instead of fixing the current engine. I plan on using 3l heads with svt cams/timing, uim, lim, tb...ect. I need to get it done quickly. Anyways, being as I live in washington state where everything is more expensive, I have two engines I'm looking at. They are from the same yard and both have 90 day warrenties.

2002 sable 29k miles for $700
2002 sable 52k miles for $450

Those prices are high compared to what other people get, but I live in washington. I don't have the money to do this in the first place, but I have to because it is a daily driver. Would either one need reconditioning?

My Point: I don't want to save $250 on the 52k mile engine just to spend more on reconditioning it. I really don't want to remove the heads.

Opinions would be appreciated.

If you're doing the work yourself I suppose the $700 isn't HORRIBLE, but it IS pretty expensive...They can be had for half the price out here :help:

Doesn't matter how many miles you don't know how they were treated. I'd get the cheaper one and change the rod bearings at least.

I don't care about their warranty. I was pointing out that the only difference is the price/mileage. The closest lkq is in portland ~200 miles away. Hmmm, rod bearings. Also need to have a machine shop polish the crank as well correct?

todras in my thread when I spoke about my 65k engine I got real cheap, you said it wasn't even worth swapping if I had that many miles, 50k isn't far less, why would you now suggest that he get the higher mileage engine?

I've always wondered how truthful salvage yards are about the mileage on motors. They could say it had 2k miles on it and you wouldn't know.

The wrecking yards here in Washington have all gone down the tube. Washington state has been really hard on them in resent years, so they are slowly closing down and moving out. Most of the yards now are the kind that have old junky stuff that they think is gold plated or something.

I just started working on a 3.0L for another guy. He called all around. The LKQ in Portland wanted like 800 for their engines then you have to drive to Portland. He eventually bought a wrecked 2003 Taurus with 10000 miles on it. He paid $1300 for the car, but got to drive it and gets to sell some of the parts off of it and hopefully make some of his money back.

Here is another one on Craigslist you could check out - only $400 for this 03 car with 10K on it. http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/pts/444854629.html
Says it is a Duratec, but no pictures.

Good luck, Mike

I emailed that guy last sunday with no reply. BTW, I would like to get some of your plates for blocking the 3l injector valleys. Are they available?

MIke

Edit, just saw your sig. please disregard.

Just got a new batch of the plates made up. We could meet somewhere if you want. Just let me know, or I could mail them to you.

He must have already sold the car. Is anyone else in the area doing a 3.0L conversion?

if it makes you feel any better i am using a high mileage '98 block and it was in great shape. the pistons were fried but it also had like 160K on it or so. i did a full tear down to make sure everything was ok and everything checked out on the block so as long as you change the bearings and change the cams you should be just fine with a higher mileage engine. clevite 77 bearings mmmmmmm :)
