Anyone have any tips on getting tires for a good price. I'm looking for a new set to go on the S4. I need some good all season 235/35/18's because I've been pushing my luck with the summer only set that is on there since I picked it up from AZ. I'm sick of sliding everywhere.

I like Goodyear Eagle GT's because of price and reviews I've read on them. They also have a $40 mail in rebate which you get right from Goodyear so it doesn't matter who you buy them from. Thoughts on these tires?

Discount tire: $753.31 installed ($157/tire)
Tires 4 Less/local shop: $740 installed
Tire rack: $606 shipped but not installed ($137/tire)
Sears Autocenter: $690 installed ($159.96/tire)

I have a $75 Sears gift card I have to burn which is why I checked Sears. I'm waiting to hear back from Sears on if they will price match tirerack.com's tire price. Tires 4 less is a local shop run by some Middle East guys who said they will beat anyone's price but their workers are somewhat questionable (i.e. might have to worry about rims scratches).

That's why I try to avoid those places. I pretty much only go to Norm's tire in Little Canada. They aren't bad priced, but probably not as cheap as Sears/Walmart.

walmart won't touch a rim over 17".

i would go to discount tire personally. i have never had a problem with them. my friend had a rim ruined there in an unusual accident and they ordered him a new one and gave him a free tire with it once it came in. and the scratches were very minimal on the bad wheel. suprising they are the more expensive of the four though!

I guess I've been lucky...

I buy my tires at www.discounttiredirect.com and then have them mounted and balanced at Walmart in Blaine. However I bring the wheels in off of the car and stand over the guys shoulder watching his every move. May be annoying to the guy, but they don't screw around either.

That said my brother had his 18" Volk wheels for his old S2000 over at Tires Plus and they royally screwed one of his wheels up mounting the tires. He went through hell trying to get the issue resolved too. Tires Plus sent the wheel off to some place in Arizona (IIRC) to have the wheel fixed, who actually screwed it up worse trying to disassemble the wheel... they apparently sent it to another place, which then did a pretty decent job fixing it, except for the fact that they painted over the chrome lip. So my brother had to sand down the paint and then polish the lip again around the lugs to get it back to like new. Anyway he ended up taking the wheels to Discount Tire as he wasn't going to have Tires Plus screw with them. After the guy at Discount Tire heard the story he mounted and balanced my brothers tires for free! So if I ever have some amazing wheels that I don't want screwed over I'd definitely take them to that Discount Tire, which I believe was in Apple Valley.

I've always had discount tire do my Cougar's 19in. rims. The S4 rims aren't anything special (stock 18in rims powder coated black) but I don't want any scratches in them if I can help it.

The S4 also needs a clutch which should be an interesting job. Supposedly the flywheel is a dual mass flywheel that can't be resurfaced so you're supposed to replace it every time you replace the clutch. I'm hoping I can scuff it up and continue using it if there aren't any really bad burn marks. I'm not sure when I'll tackle that. I can heat the garage so the temp won't be an issue but I was thinking it might be better to wait for warmer temps in case I need to drive the Cougar when the S4 needs a part in the middle of the install.

my SVT's flywheel was stock and never resurfaced, and it had like 4 different clutches on it. the thing had like 230k on it and with the organic clutch disc, didnt have any kind of chatter or anything after that much time. i'd re-use the thing
