Zetec vs. Duratec

The Duratec....why is it most of them are found with blown engines/engine trouble?:blackeye:

there are twice as many duratec posts in the old forums then zetecs. Kind of tells you which engine most of the people on this site have.

Ok, so I have a 4banger / ATX. At 60k Ford replaced the engine in my car which now has about 123k on it with no other trouble. If I had my druthers I'd have an SVT or an early SE V6 MTX loaded with all the creature comforts. It just seems to me when driving this car it lends itself to being a MTX. The way it drives reminds me, in some ways, of my old 62 Austin-Healy Sprite. That had the same feel as a car that needed to be shifted.

For how I use this car it functions just fine, but it could always be better. Seems that both engines have their place. One could spend gobs of loot on the 4banger and develope one that would out due a V6, but then that could be said the other way too. I would say the the true test is not which one can be built, but which one can last longer and provide the lowest maintenance over that time. Heck you could build a Yogo to be fast for 30' or so with enough $$$ :)

However a little push back in the seat and some smok'n tires as you grab 3rd gear isn't bad either

my 2 cents

You have no viable data either, yet you can tell us we're wrong?

You have no proof its not 27%, I have no proof that its 27% either, why must you argue with everything i say, what are you trying to prove?

Well it turns out my car has a 300% drivetrain loss. I'm putting about 150 to the wheels but I know it's got 450bhp at the crank. Prove me wrong. Do you see what I'm getting at? It just wouldn't make sense. There is a lot of evidence that points towards a loss factor of 20%. That's what the commonly held value for an auto tranny is. There's data to back that up. However, there's no data to back up a 27% number. Nowhere has someone tested a car and found that kind of loss. It's ridiculous then to assume that number. I think we can all agree on 200bhp.

Oppionions are like *******s, everyones got one.

I've never understood what this means. Yes it's true that everyone has one of each, what is the conclusion that I am supposed to make from this statement? Maybe it should go:
Everyone has an *******, but you have two and you spew **** from both of them.
Or
Opinions are like *******s, everyone has one, but you probably shouldn't go around showing people.

Surely there's a better conclusion.

Because people don't put enough oil in or rag on them?
I've seen duratecs on here with far higher mileage than the zetecs on here. Seen plenty of people replacing zetecs on here as well. You see it a bit less on here because we have more duratecs than zetecs on the site.
Ask big jim or I think parkedcar how unreliable their duratecs are.
Duratecs and zetecs are both good engines.

I agree Ross. Hector is biased, and that's OK because a lot of V-6 guys are too.

I have both cars, both with high mileage (over 100K), and the Zetec is the one that gives me fits. Not because of the engine, but I've got a gremlin somewhere that is screwing up my fuel mixture. The motors in both cars are holding together fine, no gasket problems, no leaks, etc.

And I drive my car hard every day. I just love the sound of the 2.5. The 2.0 with headers is fun too, but I wish I could get better gas mileage out of it...

Zetec more fun than a Duratec? WTH did that comparison come from? The only way a Zetec is more fun is if it's in a Focus. The Focus admitedly a more "fun" platform, I have a ZX3.

Out of the box with minor modding on the Contique platform, the V6 is better IMHO. To me it's like a V6 Mustang, sure you can mod it up to a V8, but it will never have the feel or the sound. That being said the SVO stangs were awesome.

I'm enjoying all the MPG numbers being thrown out too.

I really enjoy driving the Focus, but I have more fun with both my Contours. A 170hp duratec Contour has more hp per pound than a Zetec Focus and handles better in my opinion -- and by objective measures too, I believe. Parking the Focus is a lot easier though. :)
