Well, what I did to it yesterday. I was driving up to Reno, NV from the bay area with two friends to attend a model airplane contest and to check out the air races. As I was making my way past Sacramento on I80 one of the front tires suddenly deflated and then disintegrated, Lewis Hamilton style. For a brief moment I thought that I had hit a washboard surface on the road, which was torn up pretty badly. Then we watched the entire tread fly off to the side and it was obvious what had happened. This happened at about 70mph, and the lane was blocked by barriers on either side, so there was no shoulder to pull off onto.
There we were, crawling along at 20mph in the fast lane with everyone trapped behind us. I had to limp along for about 2 or 3 miles until the barriers ended and the lane opened up. I slowed down a bit more as I made my way to the right side of the freeway. The car was shaking like crazy with a smell of burned rubber, and the ABS and brake warning lights lit up. I thought that I had destroyed everything on that side, 'cause that's what if felt like. When I found a big enough piece of shoulder I pulled over to check out the damage, expecting the worst. Well, of course the tire was history but the fender looked ok, and the rim was still intact.
I had been rolling on what was left of the tire beads, so the edges of the rim weren't even scratched. A CHP officer pulled up behind me and escorted me to a safer area so I could change my tire. On closer inspection, everything inside the wheel well looked fine, but the rim was slightly bent in a couple of places. One of my friends got the jack and spare out and started to jack up the rear of the car. We decided to put the spare on the back and the good back tire on the front. The best thing about this whole disaster is that the CHP officer ended up changing both tires! He said he was having a slow day and I guess he felt sorry for 3 old guys! I'll be going to my local Fix-Rim dealer first thing tomorrow morning.
