I am buying mirko splitter mold

So do u already have toe mold ? And what is the plan u are just gonna hook everyone up with a cheap splitter ? And when is this gonna take place Are u gonna make them soon as u get 15 people to buy?

I busted up my splitter halloween night... I was so upset!

I have one more question; as I'm sure CF would be a little more pricey, why would you want it unless you want to show it off by not painting it? Is it tougher?

Polyflex sounds more bendy and durable, and judging from the way my CF hood has little cracks towards the rear from flapping in the wind and flexing too much, CF might not be great for a splitter unless you plan on using it for shows only; we all know how much pavement and speed-bump contact the splitters tend to take. My hood could be a different, more rigid/brittle mixture though, so who knows. Polyflex just sounds so much safer and more durable.

I could be wrong here; can someone who knows more on the subject maybe point out some of the merits and drawbacks of each material? Thanks for any clarification here.

CF is better looking. IMO. But you CAN paint CF if you want. CF is lighter and stronger as well but the plastic stuff will be very durable as well.

Generically, there are two ways you can do a CF part, the first, and most common is to make the same as the fiberglass part and use CF fabric instead of fiberglass fabric. This will save a little bit of weight, but not very much. This method is mostly for those that just want the look of CF. Sometimes, this method is done where just the outside visible layer is CF to save cost. THere is even some places that sell black colored fiberglass fabric that looks identical to CF but much cheaper.

Properly done CF parts are designed a bit different from fiberglass parts and can result in significantly lighter parts than fiberglass when done to the same strength. To do parts properly this way usually involves internal stiffeners, such as nomex honeycomb panels, and techniques to reduce the amount of resin to only the minimum that is necessary. Techniques like vacuum bagging, and even using pre-preg sheets of material. Pre-preg sheets are common in the really high $$ worlds of aerospace and racing.

Realistically, the only CF version of the splitter any of you will be willing to pay for, and that Steve's guy will be able to do with the existing mold is of the first type, and I'd recommend either the mixed fabric version, or even using black fiberglass to save the cost.

ok, sorry. i didnt want to do an official interest check thread yet because i dont have all the details. just wanted to see if we can come close to enough people to even get the ball rolling. if you want, just delete the list and we'll continue the discussion of things.

im pretty sure you'd have to prep it just like fiberglass. ill find all this out when i meet up with them. that's a good question. post up more if you have them and i can take them with me when i go to meet with them.

no, i dont have the mold. i paid for it and its waiting for me. Doc (the OP) is going to pick it up when he's in the area and then ill meet up with him to get it. ill then be taking it to the company that will be producing them for me. of course, timing is everything with the holidays coming up. lots of companies shut down for a week or so during Christmas. so i may have to wait till after to meet with them, not sure. am i going to hook everyone up with a cheap splitter? did you read my post? im going to hook up the people who get in on the first batch since we cant do anything until we get the first batch done. after that, its a lot easier to have them made and i dont have to have as many made at a time. thats why id be offering a nice discount, so i dont have to try to come up with all the money myself. after the first batch, i believe i can buy a few at a time which wont be an issue.

Yeah, just saying it as an option to help him out, you will not find a cheaper option and we have only top quality.

I am assuming the dzus scews are sex bolts? We also have those.

cool. ill let you know if we need to. currently, i have a guy who fabricates metal parts for me for mustangs/lightnings. he gets really good pricing on hardware since he's in the business. but ill definitely keep you in mind if we need help. and im always up for giving fellow CEGers my business when i can :cool:
 
I don't plan on making any money and there is no way he can get better pricing than me trust me :cool: Just throwing it out there. Personally I wouldn't want my splitter held on by 1/4 turn fasteners.

Also interested in one of the splitters depending on when the down payment is needed...damn christmas.
 
The Dzus fasteners work quite well. Many CEG'ers use them. I haven't heard of a failure yet. Members who use them should speak up.

I use one on each side without the mounting brackets supporting the bottom to the splash shield. They hold up just fine

I had a tow truck driver suggest them after he charged me an extra labor fee to get my car up on the flatbed.

That's a good point, I didn't think of that but mine will be molded so I just want something that will never come apart provide extra support and be able to be hidden. So perhaps it could be an option for people who want to mold it in.
