Pwntbywombat 3L Build Thread

After texting with Andrew...
He said the key was in the "on" position and the starter kicked in once the block got grounded. Then it tried to start and sounded like a low battery trying to start a car. And the key didn't control the starter. I wonder if he over wired or jumped straight to the starter in his initial efforts to get it to work without knowing of the grounding issue. The battery being disconnected was only thing to make starter stop.
Blessing in desguise is perhaps the low (I assume) battery... if it had turned over and the alternator kicked in, nothing would be telling the starter to stop, that would have been a mess.

So my thoughts are that hopefully just the starter is being jumped or the relay is stuck on (leaning towards the first).

and when i take the key out of the ignition, it is still trying to start itself :-/

check the main power feed at the starter to see if its contacting one of the other terminals. after i got my 3L turbo running with the new clutch I was driving and all of the sudden I heard a noise. somehow the wires moved and made the starter run constantly, even with the key off. adjusted the cable and it was fine.

i agree here. sounds like the wiring is still messed up. If i remember correctly, there are 2 wires coming from the starter, the large positive cable that goes to the battery, and a smaller one. The smaller one plugs in near the batter in a 1 pin connector. check out this picture. the "B" terminal should go to the battery, and the "s" terminal to the 1 pin connector (smaller wire). This should only be hot when the ket is turned to start. I would check this with a meter to see if it is 12V at the correct time.

so after playing with it, i have noticed that it is injecting fuel, but it is not sparking. im thinking ignition relay? unless anyone else has any other thoughts. and it is still trying to start after i take the key out...any one come up with anything? :-/

check the plug to the coil. does one of the pins show 12 volts with the igntion on? if not check the 3 connectors on the rear valve cover.

did you check the wiring like i described above? the large wire is a positve battery cable, and the small one is white/black i think, and plugs into a connector right at the battery, but should not be hot all times.

This happened with my car, the wiring for the starter solenoid got jumped by the main power wire it was rubbing against. Have you inspected ALL of the wiring around and under the fuse box/battery box?

if you took the 3 plugs apart on the engine harness mounted on the end of the rear valve cover by the power steering pump you may have a problem there as that is common. I'd check to make sure your coil is getting power and go from there.

what type of problem with those connecters? like dirty contacts?

yeah they sometimes dont make good connection. some people have had luck just unplugging them and plugging them again and really pushing them together. dont do anything until you get the starter thing squared away, if the car starts and that thing is still cranking you will destroy that flywheel/starter

You need to be trying more stuff. listing what you have done, and not done.

No one knows where you stand.

i tried jiggling/unplugging/cleaning the cables (the three connections on the side of the motor) and got nothing. i fiddled with the starter, that fixed the starter issue.

ok, now check the bigger wire on the coil pack connector for 12 volts and run that starter solenoid signal wire down and you might just get this thing out of your dads garage.
