yup

Ok awd is fun. And you guys were right the rear likes to slide out, even on the automatic cars.

The funny thing is, our Impreza didn't slide out at all. It is the only AWD vehicle we had where it didn't do that. Might have been because it was only a 2.2l that didn't put out much power.

So yeah.... Boobs and beer?

Already had a lot of beer and tequila the night I got it up and running. Woohoo. Advil was needed in the morning.

I still need to swap the COP units for another set I have. It has a slight miss which I'm sure is a COP. It's common on the Mazda 6 forums so hopefully that fixes it and it's ready to go.

New COP's fixed the issue on that Mazda. It has more pickup now. I think I'm a bit paranoid but I think it could still be faster. The new owner drove it and he loves it so that's all that matters. I did get a check engine light for low efficiency on the front cat but after some more testing with a vacuum gauge I ruled out a clogged cat for good. It has to be a slow O2 sensor on the front upper cat. I'll swap it out with another one.

I ordered a new motor for the Cougar the other day. It's a 17,000 3L motor shipping over from Montana. Picked it up for $550 shipped! Woohoo! It better be really clean inside and preferably outside or I'll be pissed. I plan to do a ton of extra port/polish work on the heads. I'm not sure what I'll do with the old motor. It is no slouch, it really moves but it smokes a bit at WOT and goes through about 1qt of oil every few weeks. I suppose I can pop the heads off and send them to someone that wants a nice set of heads and doesn't want to do the port work. I put a lot of extra work into those heads. The 3L injectors spots were welded up so it doesn't even have/need those head plates (better for air flow).

I'm a little worried about the transmission. I have cold shifting issues in 2nd and I'm wondering if I should tear it down and figure out how to replace any worn items (2nd gear syncros maybe).

^^ That's awesome on all accounts! I'd get rid of my SVT for a 5 speed 6. That would be hella fun!
Good pickup on that engine too! I need to do that one of these days... little at a time so the wife won't notice! :)

You have a tough time getting into 2nd when it's cold? I've had that going on with mine for 5 years and it hasn't gotten any worse. I changed to the Ford Honey a while back and it maybe slightly improved, but best approach for me is to park it in the garage when possible and take off in 2nd when it's not.

Although if you're going to have it out of the car for the engine swap it wouldn't be a terrible idea to take a peek anyway.

I did some searching and it doesn't sound like there is necessarily anything wrong with my trans internals. I might just leave it to save some time. The car is normally in the garage but this Mazda swap kicked the Cougar out on the coldest days of the year so far so I've been dealing with that shifting issue.

I swapped the 3L into my Cougar this weekend. My brother helped me swap it on Saturday/Sunday. It took us about 12 hours total. The new engine started up and ran like a dream. I went in had a few beers to celebrate and then took it for a drive later that night. The belt blew off about a block from my house so I nursed it home. Today I ran out and picked up a a new belt, tensioner, and idler. I swapped them on and it's been running great since.

I did stick with the 3L cams this time which I may regret. If it's significantly slower than I'm expecting I'll bite the bullet and swap in the SVT cams (huge pain while in the car). The 3L cams should provide more mid-range at the expense of top end. We will see...

I sold it off a year or two ago when the Cougar was pushed back to winter duty. Someone offered to buy it so I sold it. I can't really use 400hp in the winter. :) Maybe I'll put another one together for it in the future.

I know. And it was only at the crank and not the wheel...at least I would think. :p

Crank or Wheel, either way that's still more than the car needs dry/wet/snow in a Cougar/Contour. :) The only dyno I had was around 325whp but the MAF pegged out. I swapped in a lightning MAF and also move the intake into the fender instead of using a crappy mushroom filter. It would probably have been around 340-350whp.

Any of you guys know anything about ATV's? I'm thinking about trying to find a used one for plowing my driveway and possibly hunting/recreational use. So far the Polaris Sportsman seems to be a pretty solid bet and I'm thinking EFI would be a good option.
