yup

I understand being a nice guy to a point, but it sounds like he's not taking responsability for his own maintainence. You shouldn't have to pay for anyone else's lack of maintainence, just because you did some work that for all intents and purposes seems to not be related to the failures of this particular car. Just my .02

Where the axles new when the diff was done? if you just reused the old one, it sounds like an old age issue. Also if the CV boot was leaking wouldn't you want to reseal as soon as possible. I assume the person doing the oil changes, him or mechanic, would have noticed axle grease thrown around.

Over all to me it sounds like someone trying to pin their issues on someone else.

I think the axles were replaced previously so they were relatively new. I don't recall how new. I still feel that they should be inspecting the car regularly for issues. You have to drive quite a bit with the ties completely off before enough grease would dry up and damage the axles. I know I've seen it happen. Grease would be everywhere. I know we are all a bit lazy and don't necessarily check everything we should. I always want customers to be happy but I don't think I should have to fix this car. I think he is on the forums so he'll probably come on and post about it assuming bent on getting me to fix it.

He did say his friends told him to take legal action so that's concerning.

prett much my thought. Its pretty easy to see axle grease thrown around.
If said party would come around a month or 2 later with a torn boot I would say maybe damaged when doing diff. And to just replace the boot on good faith. But even then, he let it get to the point of failure its on him.

On what grounds would he have legal standing? Did you ever warranty your work verbal or written?

Nope, never had a written or implied warranty for general car work. That doesn't mean I won't fix something I caused but I'd require the person to bring it back within a reasonable time frame (few weeks to a month maybe). If it's months to a year later you have to wonder why this wasn't brought up earlier. In this case it seems like the car wasn't being properly maintained.

Yeah I call BS on the legal action, and if he does sue then I would think you could counter-sue for any fees you incur to defend yourself. However I don't think it would come to that.

It's been too much time, you have no idea how the car was driven over the last year and it's highly unlikely the work you did caused the issue. That's only my opinion but it seems very unreasonable to expect a free repair in this case.

That was my point. There was no warrenty if he had brought the car back within a couple of weeks even a month as you suggusted I could see taking care of the issues at a discounted rate your fault or not. But it seems like (giving him the benift of the doubt) there may have been issues that he put up with and later on complained they were causing issues because you did the work?

I say you have no responsability at this point of fixing the car but that's just my opinion.

Maybe start giving short warrenties to people? Such as a 7 day warrenty kinda to protect yourself against things like this. That way there is a timeframe they have to come back and complain in after that they have no grounds. IDK.

Hope everything works out for you bud.

Chris - I'd say your fine. If you need legal advise or defense I have a couple of friends that are lawyers who could probably help you out. At the bare minimum provide some advice. Although I had a similar question for one of them when I did some work on someone's car. I seem to remember him telling me if you didn't provide any written documents stating it was warrantied I believe it is considered 'as-is' regardless.

I'll try an make it out with my XF. It looks like someone showed up with a McLaren MP4-12C in August. Check out the pictures. That would be cool to see in person.

That's what makes this meet great. There are so many cars I would normally never have a chance to see in person there.

I agree, tell him to shove it. You did your work and did it well. He's just being a leech.

I've see what someone can do to their car in a year after when you were done working on it everything was near perfect.
